Jersey Cables - 3 Breaks !!

Yes, that was the original press position - I still have trouble believing it given the position of the breaks and the 100km distance between the locations.

What 100km distance between the locations? I thought it had been established that three 100 mile long cables had been damaged in the same area, near where they reach Jersey.

My grandfather, who was in the business, taught me not to believe everything I read in the newspapers. "The same area" to a journalist nowadays could the mean the English Channel - all of it! For example, two of the cables don't 'reach' Jersey; two of them are initially terminated in Guernsey!

The first break, repaired by Wave Sentinel, was about 60 miles north of Morlaix on the Goonhilly to Jersey direct cable.

Once that repair was completed, she moved (and as of a few minutes ago is still there) to a position about 7 miles due south of the Channel Light Vessel to repair, presumably, the Guernsey to Dartmouth cable. Nearby, the french repair vessel is working, again presumably, on the Guernsey-Blackpool cable.

It is these two Wave Sentinel locations that are ~100km apart

So, I still have difficulty with one ship dropping and then dragging its anchor in/near a TSS for a distance of 100km!

As pointed out earlier, JT (Jersey Telecom) will know within 50milliseconds when their connections were broken. Very shortly afterwards they will know exactly at which point it was broken. Also someone will have recorded AIS information to indicate a possible culprit (if it was an AIS equipped ship). Correlate both pieces of information and maybe some facts will emerge.
Cheers
Bob
