Jeckells Sails

I had quotes for new sails 3 years ago. Some from here on east coast, some from south coast.I asked about manufacture in this country. Some said they made in this country.I asked a well known east coast maker to confirm in writing. They did not.I was told that many of the sailmakers have sails made in the east and finished here, and make some sails here. This can depend on how busy they are.I eventually settled on Hyde. They were honest enough to explain (see their website ) that they moved their total manufacturing to the Phillipines some years ago where they have a purpose built loft.Their east coast representative came and measured my boat, delivered the sails and fitted them. They are very good(fully battened dacron cross cut main and triradial laminate genoa) and set well.I also bought a cruising chute from them which was made to measure as I had the luff measurement of my old chute.Just a satisfied customer.

Jeckyll's sails have a superb reputation; it's Jeckyll's sprayhoods that have an entirely different reputation! All I've heard about the Sailmaking business (a completely separate one to he sprayhood business) has been good and my own dealings with Chris showed him to be knowledgable and his solution worked.

I am sorry to have to say that the "Just Cruising" report is by far from being an isolated case.

Even though they are local-ish I can't in all conscience recommend them unless you are 100% sure of what you want and are totally committed to getting it right.
I've had sails from them over the last 30 years and its a hit and miss affair.
Funny enough the old Speedjacks were great sails but recently I've seem little to recommend other than the price.

With sails, much like anything else you get what you pays for.

I'm still happy with my main from Jeckels 4 years ago but have since bought a new jib from Crusader and I'm delighted with it.

Have you considered Saturn sails at Largs? When I got faffed about by Andy Malcolm Yachting,John at Saturn produced a new main for me, promising delivery in 6 weeks,at their busiest time(run up to West Highland Week),They phoned me to come back to Largs to have it fitted ,beating their own deadline by a week. I then sailed off for a week, and on coming back he was on the pontoon to check everything was ok. I'd recommend them without hesitation.
Did he also arrange the second mortgage for you?
