I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that there are 2 types of people afloat. Especially when reading some of the angry posts.

The laid-back type is always willing to help, doesn't mind a bit of close quarters, but is happy to give way early to other boats with less sea room - even when he's the stand-on vessel. He arrives alongside at the end of the day with little fuss having thoroughly enjoyed himself. He will always be willing to help others coming alongside or rafting.

The other type thinks all others are a waste of space and less able than himself, hates other boats coming anywhere near and defends his right of way almost to the point of collision. His entire day is spent suffering a succession of fools and idiots on the water. As he ties up, he congratulates himself on his seamanlike actions in avoiding damage to his boat. He doesn't like anyone rafting up, and certainly won't offer to assist unless it is to show off his advanced skills.

The reason I've come to this conclusion is that some people (including friends) seem to come back wound-up from almost every trip. Guess we all fit in somewhere between the two, but god forbid that I tend towards the latter.

would you care to postulate on any links between apparent wealth and a lack of cooperation?
I'm developing a theory that attitudes in the lower cost yacht havens/marinas seem warmer/friendlier than in some of the more exclusive (expensive) ones.

Re: Angry young men

Not all young. Miserable old gits are to be found pretty much everywhere. Thing is, you can walk away from them, they can't.

Not sure about this, to be honest. I certainly know what you mean - one of the friendliest places I've visited recently was Grimsby where a co-operative run their own marina - certainly not on a shoestring, but well away from the wealthy South. A very friendly bunch, but so are Grimbarians generally.

On the other hand, one of my mates sails on a small budget and is one of the most uptight I know. Contrast this with a very friendly bloke I chatted with recently only to discover that he was a member of the RYS and therefore well above my humble station in life.

Perhaps you're experience is different, but I would find it difficult to correlate wealth against cooperation. Maybe the magic word is 'apparent'?
