Having asked a recent question on here about the various types of solid boom vangs, I've decided on the Selden one. In speaking to a mast and rigging company they have recommended the long type 10, long with hard gas strut. Also, using the universal mast and boom brackets.

Has anyone got a Selden vang on a SO342 and if so, what one did you get and any tips?

Of all the ones I've worked on the Selden seems the best, though in my eyes still flawed.
On full expansion with boom weight on, the wire is too long so we usually modify by shortening it so the block is only just through the top turning sheave.
We do this because we usually recommend a cascade purchase which can be terminated either at the mast base or back in the cockpit.
Pretty easy to get a very low friction 32:1 with a cascade, minimising the number of blocks required and substantially cheaper then using double and treble blocks.

You need to pop out the plastic end fitting every now and then and thoroughly flush out with fresh water as they do corrode from the inside out.

Very interesting and good to hear some real non-sales info. I like the idea of a cascade set up, what blocks and diameter of dyneema or other did you use?

I used 4mm 12 strand dyneema and Harken high load s/s blocks though the Selden ones would be fine.

I have photo's at work which I'll send home tomorrow if I remember.
Failing that here's a quick diag,
