Jeanneau Prestige 42S (pics)

Hi jfm

Sorry for the delay in replying - been down in not-at-all-sunny Sant Carles with Hurricane.

I suppose it is true to say that the 42S is just a patio-doored hard-top, although I don't think there are many of these at this sort of size; and I don't know of any others with the big electric rear window so that you can open the whole boat up at the touch of a couple of buttons.

I know what you're saying about the trade-in idea, but there are only a couple of outfits in the uk that would underwrite a boat like my P42 for the Jeanneau, and unsurprisingly at the moment the underwrite values are pretty eye-watering. So for now, that isn't an option I'm considering. I guess the other alternative would be to accept a p/x myself on a private sale of the P42, and of course that would be something I could look at.

Have you decided on your own next boat yet? Sq 55?

Cheers

Not sure I completely agree that this is just another flybridge without an upstairs if you know what I mean. In terms of a helming experience it's completely different to downstairs in the P42. The P42 is really quite sedate; I guess because of the ips drives, the 42S heels over like a good 'un and is more more sporty in feel, although the speed-managed steering is a bit sensible, disappointingly.

But the boat is a sport cruiser, without a doubt; the cockpit feels like a cockpit and not an extended saloon (unlike Jfm I positively prefer the teaky outdoor feel in the enclosed part of the cockpit).

I know what you're saying about bringing the P42 to PV though, and to be brutally honest if you keep on mentioning it I'm just gonna have to come down there and give it a try! In all seriousness, if I can't get the P42 away over the next few months, then it would be silly not to try a med season, just to see what it is like. Definitely a plan c.

The Azimut is a load of cash, and although great-looking, it's praps a bit too trendy for me. In my own view, someone hit the Marquis with the ugly stick, and then hit it again, twice, just to make sure. So that's not on the list either.

As a former Fairline owner I want to like the T44, but I don't; and Fairline really, really need to get rid of the 'your names not down, you're not coming in' attitude at their stands at the boat show. I realise that as a Princess owner I'm a bit biased here - but even before I was a Princess customer it was very apparent to me that they have a completely different (and much more effective) approach with their prospects at the shows. In my view, Fairline could learn something from them.

Hi Jas

Good to hear from you. Thanks for your comments; I love the Portofino 46, I think it's a great-looking boat, but I think the hardtop thing is really the way to go. The Targa 47 is also nice, but expensive.

Residuals is a good point. The Jeanneau is loads more expensive this year than last, and I presume that this is because of the exchange rate as well as any inflationary factors. Intuitively I'd agree that the residuals on one of the premium Brit boats should be stronger. I'd need to dig around a bit more on this before I make my final decision I think.

Ref the folly - I'll PM you.

See you sooner (you really ought to get down to the Dog and Duck one of these months you know!).

Cheers

just dug this out whilst searching the forum for hard top boats and I just wondered if anyone knows anything more about this boat now its been around a while, I really like the look of it and its in my price range when I sell my current boat

so I have a few questions

1 what is the build quality like compared to other builders

2 would a 2008/2009 boat still loose money quickly

3 with the IPS drives are they expensive to service and maintain compared to normal outdrives

4 What other 42-45 ft boats are there out there that are hard top and under 200k

cheers

Hi

I had the one below, 390s and now have the one above, 500s.
The 42s still looks great, especially if you can avoid the champagne hull.

Quality wise, well there is a tangible difference between this and say a Targa 44 but we are talking about cabinetry and behind the scenes finish. The boats ride well, the ips suits this better than the stern drive cummins that i had on my 390. I think the are D6 500's so the boat will go pretty fast I imagine.

The slide down cockpit window, (make sure its in perfect order), transforms the aft deck and you really can avoid using the aft closing canvas kit, especially if you have the cockpit seat cover.

The downstairs living area suits uk boating but might be underused if it were a boat headed for a warmer climate, it is however very light and airy thanks to the atrium like overhead glass.

These are also very easy boats to smarten up, snap in carpets, easy to snap out and in overhead fabrics and so on.

The bottom line is that for sea keeping, (great hull shape the pushes the spray high and wide and good engine position and weight), comfort and looks, it could be a super choice. It will however have a few more rough edges than some other brands and you will notice a bit more Alpi wood creaking when you take one out on a sea trail.

It really is a turn key boat though.

Re ips and D6 service, i would think youd be looking at 2k a season....

Re other boats....have a look at that benateau 42 that Dickies cant shift...it got great reviews....

Thanks Nigel

I thought as much regards the finish compared to Fairline, Princess etc, BUT it ticks all my boxes I LOVE the seating areas and is within my budget for a hard top sports boat, will never get everything I want within my budget but this is the closest I have found, I thought I would be more than happy with a soft top boat ie V42 2008 ish model but after going on the hard tops at the show I really want one now

My main concerns are being able to re sell it and the IPS drives

cheers

If you can pick a 6 year old model up for 170 or better you will be fine 're residuals.
These boats would have been 400k plus new so the damage has been done.

This boat pioneered the ips joystick, sliding roof and dropping back window, at least at the market level in which it sits. So while they are going to have to be well maintained it will be these featurues that sell the boat in a few years.

You don't see many of them in the UK, but get down the west coast of France and they are prolific. They still look great, I love the high and super comfy cockpit and it does tick all the boxes.

Well worth a good look but make sure to get all the components checked out, there are lots of potential niggles concerning the gadgets and I don't think the aftermarket care on these boats was that good prior to the dealer shake up a few years ago. (I'm only talking about my part of the world so no offense).
