would any members have knowledge of these yachts , in practicular against the beneteau
40 and dufour 385, we came across a 2006 at £105k at the weekend , and while they
where not on our short list looks now a possibility for our next purchase, any opinions appreciated.

Same hull as the previous sun odyssey and pretty well built. Accommodation is good for the size. Handle well but Dufour probably quicker.

We had one on charter in Croatia, and it put me off Jeanneau for life. Very spacious cockpit and saloon, but we didnt enjoy it in stronger winds.

I went right off the build quality in the middle of the night when I came out of the aft cabin to get to the heads. By stepping on the end of one of the sole boards, the other end would come flying up which wasnt very pleasant.

For the sake of a few euros worth of brass screws, I wouldn't have an everlasting perception that they are ****.

Does not sound good , do you think it was due to charter mis-use.

If you are looking at these should also consider Bavaria 38/40, similar concepts.

Thanks for that , we did look at the bavaria at the lbs , very nice , but we have not come across a 40 in really good condition and at reasonable money. Disappointed on the feed back on the 40.3 on built quality .

SO40.3

We have been looking at the SO40.3 to replace our Moody 346. We have looked at a few and have been impressed by the space and design. The interiors on the second hand 40.3s that we have looked at in the UK have all been in very good condition, but then none of them had been charter boats.

We would certainly have bought a 40.3 to replace the Moody, however we came to the conclusion we need the 43/42i. (Anyone know anyone selling a SO43 closer than the Med..?!)

Best wishes

Julian

A?ny experience of how the 40.3 handles

I'm happy..

I've sailed several Jeanneaus of 40 ft and over up to 45. I now own a 1 yr old SO 42 DS which I'm very happy with. OK it isn't a Oyster or Swan in build quality but it isn't in that price range either.

All have sailed well in quite lively winds. In Turkey a few years ago we had a consistent 10 kts out of a SO42 on a beam reach in a F6 and plenty of helm control in reserve. But hey, its an AWB so it can't be any good can it??!! That'll be why they sell so many as a brand!

is there much of a difference in the handling of the 42 against the 39 or 40?

I love the SO40.... with a deep keel and FB main they go very well... I Think they are a more moderate boat than the Dufour... and thats a good thing! I had a 2000 model for two weeks on charter.... and she was a great boat.

There is a very nice example for sale in Plymouth right now..... a 2005.... I suspect he would come down to your price.... boat is mint.

Wessex yacht sales.

Of the three I would have the SO.....

Hi,

Have sailed on an SO40.3 out of Gibraltar for the last 2 years and even raced her once. She is a good stable boat, quite responsive and able to take some big seas and big wind. However she really did not like light winds.

I love the interior and it all seems to work well. The cockpit was a good size. My only concern was the ease of Sailing. Most sheets were to the top of the Cockpit and the Headsail sheets were quite far away from the skipper which meant it is difficult to single hand or sail without a small competent crew.

I looked at buying one, but bought a Bene 43.3 Cyclades instead, mainly on ease of sailing single handed (which it is set up to do). Absolutely love the boat but now selling as SWMBO wants a larger one.

Unfortunately mine in Gib so can not offer any test sails, however do not discount them. Beats the SO40.3 in racing as well......

The 42 being a bit longer and wider will be a bit more stable but also being heavier will take a bit more to get going in light airs than a sub-40 footer. On the plus side it will be a bit more solid in that wavy stuff.

I read a while back that the 42 hull, drawn I think by Phillipe Briand, was "just right" in terms of its proportions and was therefore pretty efficient and quick.

I think the 40 doesn't offer much more than the 36 or 37 apart from higher Marina fees: the layout below decks is similar, but just makes less effective use of the space

the difference in living space is amazing compared to a 36/37 , and both on a 12m berth

I have spent quite a bit of time on all three... The 36 is a nice boat... but the 37 is a lot more lorry like than sportscar... a solid boat.. but nothing to set yer hair on fire... frankly my experience with the 40 is that its preformance is head and shoulders above the 37.... we had 5 on board the 40 for a 2 week trip... and there was never any crowding.... versus 4 on the 37 for a simular period felt pretty full... and on the 36 it was a bit crowded...

I have to say I rate the 40, which we had on charter in the BVI's for 2 weeks.. with the deep keel and a FB main, very highly... the boat pointed like a very sharp pointy thing.. handled very well... easy to manage... fun , fast.... cant really say enough good things!

I would have one in a instant... the 40DS is apparently quicker still... but the only boat which I have had out which I enjoyed more was the Elan 333...

The 37 was really a different kettle of fish... a good solid boat... but not as responsive... no feel.. not as much fun.

What makes the Cyclades easier to handle than the SO40.3? Also, what makes it faster?
