Jeanneau 39 DS 2007 model closed fairleads and has any one had this problem with mooring and the fairlead hole is to small and fiddly

the later model look as if they has 50mm cut out of them is this a DIY or a factory mod if DIY whats the best results grinder or hacksaw thanks for any help David

Jeanneau modified the design. I know what you mean about the closed ones being a pain. I wouldn't try and modify them, though. Difficult to get an acceptable finish and I'm not sure if the open fairleads are beefier to compensate for the gap.

Yes, Jeanneau switched to open from closed style for DS range. I think that dimensions of open and closed versions are the same. I don't know anyone who prefers the closed style. I also agree that it would ruin the finish of the closed ones by cutting a slot.

I had a feeling that Jeanneau switched more than once between these styles, but that might be due to a mid year change. My 2009 42DS has the open style my and memory of other 42 & 39DS vessels is as follows.

2006 Closed
2007 Closed or Open
2008, 2009,2010,2011 Open

I suspect they made the change during the 2006 manufacturing run. It was possible to buy them for about 65 Euro (CHAUM.IN.FERME L200 DC1) back in 2009. You may be able to buy them CHAUM.IN.OUVRI L200 DC1 but not something I have investigated. Persuading Jeanneau to sell any parts usually involves a lot of time and money.

OK thanks i have seen some for sale 2007 that has the mod dont know if thy are a replacement or a modifcation

Yes, I have seen both and that's why I began to think Jeanneau had changed their mind more than once. However, I found that 2007 seemed to be the only year with both types. I haven't met a 2007 model owner with open style who said he'd replaced the closed version. I didn't ask about modifying them as the open ones fitted were quite obviously not modified.

Pretty certain that Jeanneau switched sometime during end of 2006 production run and that's why some boats launched in 2007 had the closed style.

We had closed fairleads on our 2007 Jeanneau 36i. Right pain. They lasted a year until some Turkish friends modified them - I think with an angle grinder, and then tidied up and polished them until they were indistinguishable from the later open fairleads. A very worthwhile mod.

If you cut them, its a good idea to angle the cuts so that they are at right angles to the normal direction of the rope, as that makes it hard for the rope to come out by accident especially if the gap is kept reasonably small.

I'm not familiar enough with the DS 39 to visualise the layout of the deck gear but would it be possible to add additional open cleats and so have the best of both worlds?
