I had considered buying a Japanese drawsaw from the Woodenboat Store a few weeks back. They cut on the pull rather than push and are the dogs b's for some finer work.
They are advertised at a tad under $30.
Cost currently at Lidle in the "specials" bin: £6.50.

If you haven't used japanese saws before they do take a little getting used to. But they are a joy to use, and can produce exceptionally accurate cuts. Be aware that the tooth configurations for ripping and crosscutting are quite different. I have found Axminster an excellent source of saws and replacement blades.

Yep, axminster have some erally nice japanese pull saws. I've used them for the last 3 or 4 years. Very easy to damage the teeth, but very useful. Particularly good for fine joinery. As mentioned, tooth sets are very different, and whilst a crosscut can be used in all directions, the ripsaw is wickedly quick as well as accurate. I've been known to use it instead of a panel saw on larger items!

I've also been using some proper Japanese ones and some of the modern copies for a few years now, agree about the easy to damage teeth but the quality of cut and the very fine kerf (cut thickness) make them a good investment.

Also about the best thing out for fitting the laminate flooring at home and needing to cut the bottoms off the architrave around the door whilst its in place....

They are great the genuine Japanese ones are the best as said they take a bit of getting used to but are great in confined spaces and tthe rip ones tear through wood at great rate. The fine ones are accurate when cutting mitres etc and dont tear the wood when cutting through and produce a neat cut /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
