There's a charter fishing boat around there, based in Portsmouth which also makes a habit of carving up boats for no good reason.

Hope some gen on Jane Elizabeth is forthcoming.

I have no idea what the Nexus 7 is, but that photo does look stupidly close, yet another bloody minded fisherman with 2 brain cells and a chip on his shoulder to go with his fish.

imo looks like a beam trawler with his gear down and trawling, showing the right signal shapes.
I doubt he us buzzing you just keeping to a trawling lanes clear of snags,
in theory you should keep clear of him.

Booms out, but no gear streamed - just on passage: so not fishing, effectively just another MoBo.
Also, overtaking rule trumps all else, regardless of the type / category of vessels involved.

You need to get his name, port of registry and his port letters and number; the name alone isn't enough, you have to pin him down if you want to make an issue out of it.

He is overtaking and he missed you, may have caused a bit of wash, but if there is no damage done and it was safe and under control then why bother? I guess you as a sailor you have passed quite to other yachts, MOBOs, shipping, etc and probably think nothing of it - most yachties do and don't care.

But, as it's a MOBO or fishing boat then it's an issue!!!!

----a boat passes with a bit of wash and we have talk of photos ----complaints to HM----the boat is 30+ feet ? displacement type hull -----speed 8-9 knots ?----nothing dangerous-----you are not being buzzed ----you are being passed----whats all the fuss about------regards lenten

Ariadne & lenten - I trust your acting as trolls. If not may 100 Jet skis plague your next anchorage :D
After all they are just having fun no reason why they cannot use that quite bit of water...

I don't see why.

Obviously I wasn't there, but going just from the photo I can't see what the problem is supposed to be. Yes, there's a bit of wash, but nothing spectacular, and the boat is at sea so it should be expecting waves. It's different in an anchorage where people might be engaging in intricate cookery or carefully laying out bits of dismantled mechanism across the saloon table.

Pete I hope this does not delay my forum flag :D but....

There are waves at sea, yes the boat should be secured for that sort of wave. Lets face it most of us only secure to the conditions and any weather expected... We do not go securing fore weather that is just not likely...

So some one buzzing past in a F2-3? then supplying waves you would expect in F5-6? Its about the same as a Jet Ski wash increase created in an anchorage whats the difference? Not allot, a bit of noise?

I would of probably altered to give myself some sea-room before the picture, then I might not be following the rules (a cardinal sin to some on here)... Always interesting altering course for boats passing close buy some alter and get closer (I suspect this one would of) others don't, most alter to give more room to both...

photo is just a fishing boat going from a to b-----if they slowed down and made a wide detour round every pleasure boat in the solent they would never get any work done-----regards lenten

No, the photo is of a fishing boat at probably flat out speed, having passed a boat too close. For some fishing boats ' work ' seems to include hassling yachts whenever possible, I have overheard them gloating as they pass rafted yachts in places like Poole & Weymouth creating all the wash they can, among other experiences so please don'tsay it doesn't happen.
