A few weeks ago I posted that I planned to cancel my YM sub (after 50 years) because the typefaces were too small and hard to read. It created a lot of comments and a post from Paul Gelder.
Well I didn't cancel (yet) and I just got my Jan issue. It's only fair to say it looks a heck of a lot better. I still don't like the dense sans-serif sections that float past the eyes like grass-smoke but that's personal. At least much of it is blacker which makes it more visible. My take on the blocky picket-fence font against the more old fashioned but legible Times font is like the difference between hard-chine and round-chine -- hard-chine works but doesn't look or please the eye nearly so much, and that's important to a reader.
Provisionally, I'm renewing my sub for another few months.
