Three Sheets...

This *has* to be a nautical term... perhaps referring to sloop-rigged vessels?

For instance, I had a few this evening... came out of work without my glasses and before I knew it, was head to wind in irons without steerage way... it all makes sense....

Kris,

Thinks it comes from square riggers. Sheets should come to the leeward side. Therefore if three sheets are to the windward side, things are pretty well messed-up.
