Anyone else getting annoyed with the Jaguar ad that pops up when you go to the YM website? Myself, I go to that website because I am interested in the Yacht-related content. Also the same reason that I subscribe to the mag. Ironic really that they publicise a car that leaks on a boat website.

Is'nt it AOL who own the group that YM is a member of?

They are not short of cash as well are they, is no business safe?

The only pop-up that I get is the invitation to subscribe (a bit annoying when I already have a subcription) but have not see the jaguar one. I suspect that my Norton Internet Security stops it!

if you download and install the free googlebar, that will stop it as well as being very useful for lots of other reasons.

You are not alowed to call it AOL Time Warner , IPC is now part of the Time Warner group of companies

Re: Simple answer

Get enough forumites together to send a petition to Kim, asking for subscription based forums. Then IPC will have the cash to run the forums without advertising. What do you think a fair fee would be? £10 per month for casual visitors, £30 per month for heavy users?

Re: Simple answer

Do you really think that an ad for a car is the differencee between there being a forum or not? Either way, surely its possible to plant a cookie showing that I've seen the add a couple of times already? Or maybe even an obvious way to click on it to make it disappear?.....

Re: Simple answer

Ads in the past have always been capped in exactly the way you describe, and this one doesn't appear to be any different (I haven't seen it for ages). When I did see, it had a close button bottom right that wasn't difficult to see.

Pop-ups

We don't run a heavy number of pop-ups on the ybw.com sites but we do allow some because they bring revenue that helps to pay the bills.

As you might expect the Internet sites here have their own cost centres and so, like any business, they have to wash their faces, which is all the revenue assists us to do. Although anyone running Internet sites often struggles with the twin curses of beliefs that web equals free and instant the reality is somwhat different.

Brendan raises an interesting point -- we could decide to charge a subscription for these forums, especially as we keep the forums themselves completely free of advertising to speed performance, but have always chosen to make them freely available. Advertising and sponsorship assists with that aim.

Regarding the question concerning capping of appearances, this should be working. If you are seeing the Jaguar ad on each occasion you visit run of site pages on ybw.com then please let me know.
