Hi

I am looking at bilge keelers mainly but have seem some lifting keel versions out there.
The keel does not fully retract so I wanted to find out whether it would dry out flat in the mud and whether it would be practical to keep a lifting keeler on a drying mooring?

Thank you all

If your interested in a Jaguar 22 lift keel, I put you in touch with owner, who might sell at a sensible price.

I had a Jaguar 25 lift keel some years ago, and it was fine kept on a half-tide mud berth. It is properly described as a swing keel, which means it won't dry out flat on hard sand, say. However there are two advantages to this type of keel IMHO. One, you've always got some keel down even at minimum draught helping to reduce leeway when sailing in shallow water. Two the keel swings back if you are unfortunate enough to hit an obstruction.

You will need to check the keel pivot for wear, and also the connection of the lift rope/wire to the keel. The winch on mine was very low geared and needed many turns to raise the keel from fully down to fully up.

Hope this helps.

This makes a lot of sense and was the answer I was hoping for.
I would imagine windward performance is pretty good isn't it?
If I was sleeping on board and she went aground on good ol East Coast mud, would she tip me out of bed?

Regarding the things to watch for with the keel. I had some fun and games of this sort with a Snapdragon 23 so I would hope I could manage with the Jag.
Is the Pivot easy to get at or is it glassed in?

Thanks for the advice

The Jaguar 25 is a UK built Catalina 25. I have a Boomaroo 25 which is the Aussie built version with the same swing keel.
It's OK to let it settle on mud or sand but if you take it out of the water you have to support the hull with no weight on the keel. It draws 2 ft 8 ins with the keel up. My boat is on a fore and aft mooring in a creek and I have to go out over a sand bar - I can get over it even at low tide and lower the keel once out in the bay. Fully up to fully down is 28 turns on the winch.
If you want to read up about keel maintenance have a look at www.catalinadirect.com and go to Catalina 25 technical tips.
You can get replacement bits from them for the keel pivot, lifting cable etc.
There is also a forum with a section specifically for Catalina 25's at www.catalina-capri-25s.org

Baz! You are, as we say in the UK, "The Man!".

Particularly loved the tips section.

I looked at a couple of liftings before settling on a bilge keel Jag. both seemed worn and likely to need maintenance. the draft on mine is only a metre, I fit up most estuaries and creeks.....and if I ground - its time for extra maintenance and a scrub down ! :D

Agreed. We settled for a bilge/twin keel as there is less to go wrong.
