hi
any milford locals to cast light on a navigation puzzle?

heading south through jack sound recently my waypoints (picked off the chart manually) showed about 185 degrees true as a bearing line between Tuskar Rock and the Blackstones wheras the Imray Giude to the Pembrokeshire coast indicates (from memory) 201 degrees true for this line to have a safe passage.

I had not made any adjustments to the chart for differences between charted positions and GPS as I would have thought that this would not have affected relative positions so close together.

Is this a known error/anomalie in the charts foir this area or did I simply get the waypoints a little out?

Eyeballed this as a sensible alternative to GPS

Not sure of the bearing but you can use a transit of the blackstone with the W edge of Skokholm.

The course to steer is given as 021 T or the reciprocal of 201 T taken on Tusker Rock and leaving Tusker to the East in Tom Bennett’s “Pembrokeshire Coastline”.

This book, ISBN 0-9512114-7-1 @ £14.99 gives you all the information you need for the Pembrokeshire Coasline, including small tidal charts and best times for Jack Sound and Ramsey Sound. I have no connection with Tom Bennett, it is just a good book for the area.

Good sailing, George

hi chaps

thanks for comments - my question is whether the bearing in the Imray guide is correct or a bearing is correct calculated from the chart features tuskar rock/blackstones as they seem to be different by about 16 degrees?....or whether I just made an error!

Sailing Today gave the bearing as 018 degrees True heading North, (198 reciprical) in an article from April 2004. and then heading NW towards clearer water when abeam the northern tip of Midland Island.

Personally I find that I don't have time to use GPS and use the transits.

If you are still at Rudders, I can photocopy the article for you and leave it on your boat.

I now nearly always use little sound (just on the othe side of middle island) its not as hairy unless you end up in the eddy behind the blackstones. I use admirality chart 1482 for close inspection of Jack, Little, Ramsey and Caldy Sounds rather than GPS
