SITREP
(Situation Report)
NUMBER ONE
28th May

The start off the western end of Plymouth Breakwater was in warm, hazy sunshine and an occasional light breeze from the SW. The master gunner (Peter Cameron – regular Black Velvet crew known as the ‘un-paid, paid-hand’ plus Peter Seldon, the ship’s ‘chief engineer’) managed the loading right this year (thankfully no rain as that sets the baby powder into cement so the gun can’t be closed). Peter C fired the ten and five minute guns.

For some lack of coincidence I failed to meet up with Norm of the Newport Yacht Club for, had he been afloat, it had been my intention to ask him to fire the starting gun: once I knew how many people were actually going to be embarked. If you are reading this, Norm, we’ll make a firm commitment for 2014!

Shortly after the start a bank of fog rolled in: as did the Brittany Ferry.

The following 31 crossed the line (as far as I could count) except for Andy Lane (see below) plus Tony Saunders and Tony Dudman (also see below):

Trevor Leek Jester UK
Tony Head Triple Venture UK
Bill Churchouse Belgean UK

The following was received the week before the start:
Tony Saunders on board Aspect:
Ewen, I am not launching Aspect till Wednesday and as I will have to set up the rigging connect, electrics, I will not make Plymouth for the start. I hope to follow on but will keep you informed as to when I leave Cowes. I might follow with Tony Dudman as we have been in touch by Email. Hope all goes well at the weekend.

Tony Head on board Triple Venture reported:
Position 27 May 2200UTC 49N47.5 004W45.9 Co 240 Spd 5 Wind SE 14kts baro 1020 Nice moonlit night. All well and good conditions but lots of shipping around so keeping these brief.. Tony Head

Andy Lane’s SPOT signal from Bula was forwarded:
New SPOT sent. 40 nm s of P(lymouth). Need to fix engine in P. Arrive late tonight. Andy
Indeed he did arrive late and sent the following via Eric this morning:
Just arrived at QAB. Having repairs done and will leave for the Azores asap. My mobile phone no is 0033632960227. Really sorry to have missed you all, but looking forward to catching the others up in Tierçera. Best wishes. Andy.

In conclusion we would all like to thank the Commodore, Past Commodore, James and David plus all the catering staff of the Royal Western Yacht Club as well as the Queen Anne's Battery team for all they did. Letters are on their way.

I would (we all would) particularly like to thank Roger and Brenda Taylor for all their faultless organizing and administration.

Thanks, too, to James for his sweepstake and to John for the possible award to the first home-made yacht to arrive.

I don't know how many masts Bill climbed nor into how many bilges he dived but his efforts were, as always, prodigious! I hope he remembers that it is the Azores this year and not Newport!

Following Sitreps will only be issued if there is anything to report.

Happy moons’ls to all, afloat and ashore.

Ewen

While Ewen's 'signal' came with neat columns, the IPC software couldn't sort that out, so ran 'Participant Name-Boat Name-Country' all together.
