Hi everyone. I have a problem with my Jabsco toilet. When the seacocks are left on overnight the bowl sometimes fills up with water.
Can this be resolved by descaling or do I have to take it apart and clean/replace the joker(?) valve.
Thanks in advance, Phil

Should not do that if correctly installed with anti-syphon loops and valves.

If its back filling from the discharge the joker valve is probably defective or scaled up also the base valve is suspect

A new" twist and lock" pump assembly might be a worthwhile purchase. Otherwise tear down, descale or replace parts as needed

If its filling via the inlet then look at the valve on the inlet antisyphon loop

Hi VicS, I installed with anti-siphon loops but found it didnt work very well. The previous toilet didnt have them so I removed them. It has been working
OK without for over 2 years. Yes it is twist and lock, should this stop backflow?

Thats the idea.

Regarding the anti-syphon loops. A common mistake is to put the inlet one in the hose between the seacock and the pump. Then it wont flush properly because it sucks in air. The correct place is replacing the short hose supplied (and fitted) with the toilet between the pump and the bowl.

If your toilet is installed above the water line then backfilling is as VicS says, due to leakage past the joker valve. This is usually easy to detect because the water will smell of stale urine. If your toilet is installed below the water line you really should have loops, as otherwise there is a real risk of flooding the boat. Water can pass the pump valves if its head is sufficiently high and I am not certain that a Twist'n' lock can prevent this.

Had exactly the same problem yesterday when I pumped the toilet after cleaning with the inlet and outlet valves shut by mistake. When opened the toilet filled up. On inspecting the joker valve found that it had turned itself inside out. Made correct and as it was in good condition re-installed and is working. I will get a spare joker valve for future. I always close the hull toilet valves when leaving the boat and whilst sailing.

Interesting how you never see that on new AWBs but you always see it on Najads/Nauticats etc. Are the heads higher wrt the waterline on Beneauvarias? And still above it when heeled? Certainly having talked to Jabsco at boat shows and trying to ask "off the record" whether the vented loop between a twist n lock pump and the bowl was necessary or just @r$£ covering they were adamant that yes it was necessary for toilets below the waterline. I cut the holes and installed the loop, although it had gone for 20 years with previous owners without sinking.

Anyway...as others have said, joker valve is the first suspect: recently serviced my pump which which cured the bowl filling over night. Be aware that there are different service kits for jabsco twist 'n' locks. Some have far more stuff than you might need. You can also buy spares like joker valves separately so if you're time rich and cash poor might be an idea to dismantle the pump and see what looks like it could do with replacing and what just needs cleaning up then work out the cheapest way to acquire the replacements.
