My boat (Sealine S28) hasn't been used for a few weeks however everything is turned over periodically in between trips. The Jabsco manual toilet hand held pump is not working, in the past when this has happened, it seemed to resolve itself at sea. Appears there may be a vacuum loss or something. Any tips to restore the heads? The sea valves are in the required position.

Thanks

Does "not working" mean it won't bring in any flush water? Won't empty the bowl? Won't bring in any flush water OR empty the bowl?

If it only refuses to bring in any flush water, make sure the wet/dry lever in is the wet position. Try putting a little mineral oil into the bowl with a liter of water...pump that through, then wait an hour or two and try it again. 'Cuz if you left the boat to sit for an extended period with the lever in the dry position, your problem is most likely due to a flap valve that's dried out and distorted. The mineral oil and water should soften it up.

If it won't empty the bowl, you may have a clog downstream of the toilet or a sea critter who's set up housekeeping on the outside of the thru-hull, blocking it. Or the line may be full of sea water mineral buildup.

If it won't do either, it could be all of the above, or just another illustration of the poor quality of Jabsco toilets.

Thank you and apologies for being vague. The problem is indeed that it won't bring in any flush water and more than likely the wet/dry lever has been left in the dry position. Will certainly try the oil remedy as indicated.

Appreciated.

It may well be the seal at the top of the pump tube is worn. I've a Jabsco and have had to replace this seal twice in 5 years. It is possible to buy just the top seal section but not all chandlers know ( or want toknow)this, though most stock someJabsco spares.

I had the same problem, and mentioned it to a Jabsco supplier at the SIBS. Its a known problem, he said, and he pulled out a polly bag full of springs. You need to release the 6 screws holding the top faceplate, and insert a spring on one of the valves (cant remember which one, but it will be obvious when you open up - or ask Jabsco). The problem is that the weighted valve is not heavy enough to maintain a seal, and the spring provides more force. All you need to do is ask Jabsco for a spring!

Good Luck

I agree with the headmistress. When I leave the boat I shut off the seacocks and then move the lever to the pump in position and this seems to prevent the distortion of the valve flap. You must remeber to move the lever to the pump out position when you reopen the sea cocks
