Now the problem, may not be a problem yet, as i will be using the boat on river/canals and the sea inshore it is unwise to pump out over board. And not viable as a full pump out system. so the only way to go is use it as a cassette loo, i think i can get the tanks made a coupe of 20-25l will do i hope, about as much that is comfy for me to lift. Not sure how quick the tanks will fill as i have only ever used cassette loo`s as a full unit.

I will talk in a minute to a chap that could make me some tanks i hope, if not i will make them myself from GRP, and fittings i need to work out yet.
The tank will go under the rear deck with easy access and a spare under there also. pipe will go through the lower bulkhead to it, so if any leaks it will be in the bilge and get pumped out.

Any thoughts on how i go about this and what fittings i need so i dont get, shall i say sh** up to the eyeballs.

Thanks folks

Have to say, to me it sounds easier to rig a pump-out system than one with removable tanks - but maybe you mean "not viable" because there aren't any pump-out stations near you?

The toilet will discharge down 1.5" flexible hose, so you just need to work out how to connect that to your tank in a way it can be disconnected for removal. I suppose in extremis that could just be "dangles in through the cap" of a jerrycan, but the smells leaking out around it wouldn't be much fun. Sure you can google disconnectable plumbing fittings as well as I can.

One thing to bear in mind is that you want the hose to be as short as possible, because you want to avoid waste sitting in it which will eventually smell (even through the wall of the hose) and will encourage blocking. To do that, you need to flush clean water all the way through afterwards, at a rate of seven pump strokes per metre of hose. So the more hose you have, the more flush water you pump into the system, and the quicker your tank fills up.

Rather complicated and expensive. If you're happy to empty a cassette tank, just go to a caravan shop and get a Porta Potti. They are remarkably cleverly designed, work very well, need no plumbing, and are very easy to empty (there's a valve which lets air in to stop splashing).

Yes i mean by not viable as in not many pup out stations.

A mate has shown me these fittings that can be used to connect the pipe to the tank.

also air valve for aid emptying the tank

The tank will be next to the loo so pipe will be short.

I have used porta/cassettes before, infact got one out side but it is an old one and a bit past its use.

I went down this route when we went to sunnier climes, Two heads on board so took out one and fitted the porta potti, the regular one. The tank is just about the right size to carry to the onshore heads. Lasts the two of us 3 days. Complies with the regs etc. I dread to think what would have happened if I had bought the bigger one! It would have been far too heavy to carry!

I've got one built in to the caravan. It's got a large capacity cassette which is removed from outside through a hatch so no risk of spillage inside. When we first had it, I waited till it was brim full before emptying. Not a good idea, shit and water is heavy and I could hardly carry it. Nowadays I empty it more often and have a little trolley rescued from a marina rubbish pile.

We have both a sea loo and a portapotti 360 and we swop them over when going inland with the portapotti clipped to a plywood base that bolts down using the same bolts as the Jabsco. I can forsee a problem with your plan based on our experience. Our portapotti has a 21litre waste tank that lasts 2 of us for 3 days and it is very miserly with the volume of flushing water, probably only 0.1 of a litre per flush. However, the Jabsco heads will need at least 1 litre per flush even with a short hose between it and the removable holding tank if you want to ensure no waste products sit in the hose between uses. Therefore, your waste tanks will each fill up many times quicker than the portapotti waste tank. Even with 2 tanks you may not even get through 24hours per tank.

Thanks for that, i think, well it is the only reason i will stay with a porta loo, i sorted all the fittings aswell. To many folk have said the same as you so....

Thanks all for the help and advice.

I have had two heads on my boat for 20 years, I did have holding tanks on both for 10 years but could not get rid of the smell, so discarded the tanks, only this year did I consider a Porto potti for when I had children on board and spending time inMarinas a long way from the toilets. It was the best mod I have done for a while, I generally use the shower in the forward heads, and to be able to use a toilet on board when it's raining is great, there are no smells it the tank fits into a large carrier bag very easy to empty. No plumbing wonderful, anybody want a used Jabsco, ?

There is a post on a DIY composting toilet for a boat. I will try and find it, but, basicly a bucket with a hinged seat attached and you do your thing then chuck in some sawdust. Lasts for quite a while with NO smells.
Google AIrHead for a more complex system, but still DIYerble
