The raw water pump on my Beta engine (Jabsco 29460-1431) originally had an impeller with 10 vanes (18653-0001). However Jabsco no longer stock this (though it's available from other suppliers) and list the required impeller as 653-0001 which has only 6 vanes. Is there any evidence to suggest that 6 vanes are better/worse than 10 in terms of reliability, life and performance?

Assuming the fit is ok, both diameter and depth, you'll only know if there's a loss in coolant effect when pushing the engine hard. Then it could overheat. But if there's no alternative impeller, you have to go with what you've unearthed, I guess.

The new Jabsco impeller looked different than what was on the engine. Same diameter and width, but fewer and thicker vanes. The vane were so thick and stiff, that I could not get it pressed into the ... 04-03-2006, 10:04 PM.

i would have thought it makes little or no difference. The volume of water pumped is dependant on the pump chamber volume and that hasn't changed. If anything it may have increased slightly with less vanes. Not noticeably though. The thicker vanes may mean that they are stronger and do not break off as easily, therefore making it more reliable?
