Peggie,

I'm relieved to say that on going aboard, prepared for a nasty, smelly job, I tried a few hard pumps and suddenly it cleared.

In this case patience was a virtue. The thetford toilet paper must just have dissoled enough.

By the way, Headmistress, the outlet pipe on this Jabsco is 1.5"!

Thanks to everyone for their advice which I now have printed out on board - just in case in the future.

But just in case you don't have time to be patient again, I suggest you instruct your guests to limit TP to 5-6 sheets/flush. If they need more than that, do a second flush... or, if you're uncomfortable going into that much detail in explaining how the toilet works, you can do what I used to do:

A small pail with a lid, liners, and ziplock sandwich bags, that lives in your dock locker except when landlubber guests are expected. Then it goes into the head beside the toilet and Instructions to guests then become simple: unless you've eaten it first, it goes in the pail. NO exceptions, not even a toothpick. (You can make a sign to hang in the head if you're really uncomfortable telling them). You don't have to explain what the sandwich bags are for (tampons, and napkins)...unless your guests are real slobs, they'll figure that out for themselves and use them. Just make sure they're in plain sight. When the guests go home, the liner goes to the dumpster with the rest of the trash and the pail and sign go back into the dock locker.

Jabsco did begin offering a 1.5" discharge fitting a few years ago as an alternative to their "standard" (standard only to them, at least in the US) 1"...because all holding tanks have 1.5" fittings and people objected to the need for reducing fittings. However (here in the US anyway), you have to substitute it for the fitting that comes with the toilet. So since holding tanks are much rarer in the UK than here, I'm surprised that yours turned out to be 1.5", but glad, 'cuz it does reduce the clog potential.
