I am going to bring my boat out for a month, can anyone tell me if it is safe to pour some diluted car anti freeze in the toilet and holding tank just in case there is any fluid left in their to stop it freezing and also down the sinks and shower, appreciate your thoughts on this.

If your doing the toilet dont forget to remove inlet pipe to toilet and then suck up the A/F mix. Its no good just putting in the bowl and flushing thro. as you will leave water in the valve assembly (just under handle) this will freeze and knacker the plastic case.

Mmmmm I would say No.

I am certain that a mix of anti-freeze and of course bleach often used in toilets can react to release Chlorine Gas, which in even small quantities is very toxic.

I recall a circular about this many years ago, when a maintenance man died having stored leaky anti-freeze containers next to some bleach in a plantroom.

I expect the quantities you are dealing with are very low, but I would always be cautious when mixing a coctail of chemicals. If in doubt, to be safe, I would recommend you contact the manufacturers to seek their professional advice, unless someone who is suitably qualified in this forum can answer it (and I dont mean in the style of 'I have done that and its OK' - Check with manufacturer just to make sure!

You shouldnt put bleach down marine toilets,as you have a stainless steel holding tank you must flush out regularly with clean water as urine and stainless dont mix. I put A/Freeze into my holding tank which is nearly empty when boat out of water.I also flush out well before adding A/Freeze.

Thanks for the replys. I will make sure that I flush it with plenty of fresh water first. I had no idea that urine and stainless steel was a bad mix. I will make sure in future that I give it a good flushing with fresh water.
