Jabsco electric 12v fresh water pump issue

Went aboard a freinds yacht yesterday. to help find a fault, shower tray pump not working.

The pump spins up alot easier when the brass plate is off the bottom.
there is wear on the back of the plate.
when the plate is put on, motor draws alot of current to start and spin up.
this is a brand new water pump apparently.
Has anyone here had the same experience?

Sounds like an impeller pump, if that's the case it's not the best choice for a shower pump, unless it's immersed in a grey water tank, as it will run dry every time it's used, until it primes. In which case, i would swap it for a diaphragm pump.
