So , a few years ago (4) I helped a friend sort out his two Iveco diesels on a big steel peniche. One had sheered the rotating bits in the CAV injection pump and the other was showing signs of similar with crude in the unit.
Both were rebuilt by a prof specialist at slightly eyewatering prices. We, in the meantime, went through the fuel system, esp the filters, but could not find anything other than some slight stuff that should be stopped by the filters. Big ones off the tanks, then two in sequence on each engine. None showed any real problems, certainly no water.
So, same again.. the same engine has sheered the HP pump rotating unit and the other shows signs of crap in the the top cover of the pump. OK, it is residencial, but he is meticulous about maintainance and runs them every couple of months for an hour or so. We can't follow where the stuff is getting past the filters. He has had it for 20 yrs with no probs and it was ten yrs old when he bought it.
Next step, is to cut inspection hatches in the wing tanks and have a look. But previous tests with water paste have come up negative. The fuel that I drained from the working pump was clear, but might have some sediment, except the visible bits of the pump after removing the cover were quite contaminated. with crud.
Now looking for a replacement pump for the duff one and maybe extra filters, Racor?
