I went on Amazon and saw this fantastic book so bought it for for Mrs G.

"The Sea Wife's Handbook" little gem it is, contains some cracking paragraphs

bay rum or someting of the sort rubbed into the hair at night.......

Nothing looks smarter or more nautical than navy and white and when it is teamed with a reefer jacket with brass buttons it is right for any occasion ashore....

Bits about wearing a wig just about finished her off -

I didn't know it was printed in 1970 and she got to the post box before I did.

The stitches come out in about a week. I blamed it on Tome so watch yer ears mate..

Thanks for the tip. I've just ordered a copy for herself. Five quid for a VG hardback copy from Abebooks. Now - where does this fall in the RYA syllabus? Before "Competent Crew", or only after passing Yachtmaster?

That's one birthday present sorted.

Actually I think it comes before "Diplomacy for Men" but you'll find that "unarmed self defence" and "grovelling for skippers" are prerequisites.

Don't knock it - I was very privileged recently to be invited aboard a boat in Tobermory where the skipper and crew were attired as described. The G&T, with a slice of lime, was served on a silver plate.

Claymore's skipper and crew set an example for us all.

Your post has had me thinking. I had hardly dare think about it before, coming from lowly mud berth beginnings.

Now, owning a HR, perhaps I ought to consider a higher standard of dress, , indeed a general improvement in ashore behavior, to think perhaps the chance of slipping up the old social ladder maybe even ... gasp ... drinkies with say the likes of the …(slightly bowed head)…..”Royal Lymington Yacht Club” no I must’nt get giddy, just the aspiration to park next to one of those fine chaps is enough for now..

Yes, the standards must improve; I like the silver service idea.

Tome has his own full time steward; I want one of them too.

Obviously, you've lead me into thinking on a higher plain, it’s dawned on me that I've been swigging ale too long with the likes of the lowly rabble on here. Things have to change, a wider circle, champagne, canapés; not two kebabs and 8 pints of best bitter..

Oh yes, and dinner jackets etc at Tigh na Truish. Makes such a difference. It's not as though one wishes to be associated with the type of tottie who drops his kecks in public, does on?
