I\'ve Had Enuff......

....of this bloody volvo heap of crappy engine. It ruined a good weekend again. On top of that Dolphin Haven at poole charged me £10 for an hours mooring Rafted up to another boat in one of the most inacessable moorings ever devised.

The ever so reliable volvo blew a head gasket coming thru the entrance at poole. No warning no high temp warning no cough cough splutter splutter, Just bang! The venerable little 4 stroke mariner pushed the boat all the way back up to wareham, well ridge anyway. On a pint of petrol!. Took off the head on return, turns out its just a shodily made gasket, and an original part too boot, will replace it with a coopers part much superior.

So to another end to a happy weekned of boating bliss, what is that signature of PGD "wont cost much to put it right". Ha you aint been to volvo for any parts lately have you! Oh and by the way Aztec, put some varnish on those bare timber topsides, my wife says you need a slap !!

Ouch - You poor thing - I used to have a Vauxhall Viva that used to eat head gaskets for breakfast - record was 35 minutes to change.
I'll give you a tow when I bring the boat down to RedCliffe !!

Dump the piece of shit and buy a ford or something, anything but a volvo. One of the guys on the rig here has a wowo tamd 74p, 200 hours, no warnings nothing, cracked block, not our fault say wolwo and basically he's stuffed, you can imagine what a new engine costs in Norway, beers £6 a pint and gnats piss at that, the engine cost in the region of £50k, yes I'm serious!

Re: Farmer Barnes...

.... has cottoned on to this boating malarky and is nilking it for all he can get and what the planners will allow. Hope to have the thing fixed by next week so I'll meet you in the pub for a pint, Oh and by the way the Harbour Authority is hot on the speed limit now, I got a warning for doing 10 and a half knots!!!!

Why is it we never hear anything from Volvo on this forum - to scared? I have an issue with Volvo, I bought a new raw water pump, had it fitted and the back plate broke, the engine was only started once. Send it back to Volvo and got back a response that the part was fitted incorrectly or some such thing and that they were not responsible there fore warranty was invalid - the engineer who fitted it is claiming it was fitted correctly and that the back plate was fractured - result so far, I'm out £300! Volvo's customer relations must be the worst in the world!

Ten & a half knots

Not bad out of 'venerable little four stroke Mariner'.

I usually stick to 10 mph, figure no one can get too upset then. Mind you, never been sure if limit is over the ground or through the water. On a strong spring ebb I've been planing, and still showing 10knots over ground, when returning to Poole.

Good luck with engine, my Mercruiser never missed a beat in 3 years, bl**dy hell, shouldn't say that, touching wood, crossing fingures and anything else I can think of.

Re: Farmer Barnes...

Volvo, IMHO, could,nt give a toss! As long as they can sell overpriced parts to punters who will begrudgingly pay up then fine! Well no actually, in the past i have had to buy a new starter for £435. OK that included £10 over night delivery. But the same Bosch part, not volvo manufacture, from a car factors was £85. So the solinoid had a bit of heat shrink round it to protect against sparks. That must be the most expensive piece of heat shrink going. And before anyone says "ah yeah but its a marine starter". No it aint! Its the same bloody part number for a volvo 240 car and a few besides. Head gasket £45 quoted from Volvo marine. From Volvo car sales place £27. Its the same bloody part in the same packing wheres the extra going. And its not even an engine designed specifically for the marine market in my boat. Its the same engine found in a quiet a few volvos plodding round the highways and byways of this fair land, so they cant even use that excuse. In fact I dont think any of the petrol engines they "produce" are actually designed for the marine market. Adapted yes. Designed No.

Re: I\'ve Had Enuff......

Given all the hassles people have had with Volvo engines, has the time come for the various magazines in these fora to do a piece on shoddy treatment.. sort of a "watch sea dog" and of course allow Volvo to explain how failed parts were wrongly fitted or water makes its way past a rapidly spinning turbo charger with enough force to overcome back pressure and fill a cylinder all without harming the turbo and so on....

They can also explain why the same part for a car costs half that from their marine division.

The only reason they get away with it is because there isns't enough negative publicity to make them behave.

Perhaps a concerted campaign of making the media aware, especially TV (I am thinking watchdog on BBC here) would help?...

The average punter isn't going to differentiate between Volvo Marine and Volvo Cars... just hearing the brand associated with poor service, buck passing and shoddy workmanship will make the company sit up and take notice and maybe address the problems......

As for me.. I will never buy a boat new or used with a Volvo engine.... not that I am having much luck with my Lister at the moment... but it is 30 years old... ah well the refurbished starter motor will be back with me soon and all will be well..... hopefully......

Nick

Yes, after receiving derogatory replies to my letters, I totally agree the Worst Customer Service in the World.

If I have my way I will never buy another Boat with a Volvo engine, and was thinking of buying a Volvo Car - I think not.
