For those who are interested I had a little bearing problem

Basically it spun up on the shaft and took a few thou off the inside of the housing.

The new one is a tight fit but not as tight as it should be i.e. big hammer to force it in not required:(.

A new transom shield with all the bits its £4500k + (bl$*dy Yamaha) so I looked about and found a product called Truloc 211 bearing retianer.

I am hoping (really hoping) this stuff will do the job. Spoke to their technical and they said no sweat and its designed for this as in taking up tolerances.

Put it in 2 days ago and cant pull it out by hand (just about could before) and the guy came to allign it today and it still didnt move when he was wacking it about!

I am hoping to try it out this weekend so will yet you know how it goes with 240hp through it!

If it works perhaps we can all stop spending so much on new parts and just glue eveything together ;)

Hi Paul, hope the advise I agve was some use, you got it all out in the end.

Id have knurled the alloy housing to give the bearing something to grip on to rather than just relying on the glue to hold it in.

You could have also had it machined out and a sleeve fitted then machine it to the exact size of the bearing.

Thanks Paul

Hi paul

Your advise was invaluable. I wouldnt even have got the leg off without you!!

Machining is my next stage if needed. Roughing it up would have been a good idea. I did go round with emery paper so fingers crossed.

No doubt I'll be back in touch at some point as I reckon this might get me to the end of the season at best, then will sort properly.

Dont be suprised if the whole thing arrives on your doorstep via royal mail :)

With the costs involved think it was definately worth taking a chance. With leisure use only the worse that can happen is that you limp back in and end back up in your previous situation, alternatively you may never be troubled with the problem again.
However now would be a good time to start searching the interweb/freeads for that knackered old unit covered with 3 coats of Hammerite lying unloved in somebodies shed.
No silly desperate to get back into the water prices... just a give you £150 .... take it or leave it mate.Tidy it up ready to bolt on,you could sell it on later if not used
Bought a complete transom assembly for my Volvo 280T(rarer than hens teeth) complete with all pipes rams etc for few hundred pounds recently, price for just a couple of rams £1500.00 from Volvo.
It is sitting in my shed at this very moment ...just in case I need anything from a bolt to a steering arm,so boat out new bit ready and waiting and straight back into the briny.

Cheers Oldgit

I'm thinking along the same lines.

Defo a problem to sort when its raining so as you say, I can take my time to find one at a good price rather than seeing the sunshine and spending loads!!

We shall see how things progress!!!

Discussing this today with an old engineer,he was amazed that no one had mentioned using some "shimming".He produced an old tin conatiner full of sheet brass of various thickness and said that this was the way it would have been done before the days of mamby pamby glue.
select the thickness of sheet to take up the slack cut off the correct size/shape with scissors and bash the thing in using a drift of wood.
