I've come over to the dark side

engines?

sort of blue ones and there are two of them. generator thingy in the middle.

ford sabres 275's so looking for about 5 litres and hour??

mind you compared to the handbag/shoe/hairdo budget anything would be cheap!

Arrph Arrph ! :D:D
You are such a Wag Sir!!:)

Anyway
Here is a measure
Similar vessel
Cheverton hactually

Twin 250's
Sabres
I have been driving it a bit lately

At 14 kts cruising
14 galls an hour
Tickover 7 galls an hour (4/5 kts)
WOT, 20 kts 22 galls an hour, maybe more, not really checked, too expensive!

Welcome to the Dark Side:)

I don't want to think about Pounds Spent.
Thank you very much!

Tother thing
Its more a consumption/ range thing
I have always worked on galls per hour, ref range etc
Old fart see
Still think 'cables' an 'Fathoms'
Sad innit!

Shame you didn't make this announcement a few days ago, on 4/5/2010.
Then we could have said "May the Fourth be with you"! :D

Re the fuel thing: a rough rule of thumb is that the power you use is (roughly) proportional to the cube of the shaft speed -- so if you reduce to 80% of max rpm, you'll be down to about 50% of maximum power.
And you will probably burn about 1 gallon per hour for ever 20hp you use. So at 80% revs, your 275s will probably be producing about 130-140 hp (each) and burning about 6.5-7 gallons per hour (also each).

she is a Nelson 42, what have I done????

Congratulations, most would consider the Nelson to be very sound and something to strive for.

It's not a performance boat and probly a touch roly but one that will run for years after the flashy plastic ones are up the river!

Enjoy. ;)

well

probably pop by in the near future so the A hammerhead better watch out! Please please can you grab a line and NO laughing at the doubtless hash up we'll make of parking!!

Poke about day...

Well it's off down the coast (by car) to go and poke and prod and start engines and switch things on and see what gives.

Not entirely sure where to start really but Mrs G has camera charged so photos later if anyone interested.

Have a great day, a new boat is so exciting, and a change from sail to power really isn't that different. I did it so speak with some experience.

Yes there are die hard raggie's that will never understand that for a lot of us, the boating way of life, whether it be by sail or power is what we love.

Of course you have purchased the best example of an acceptable ex-raggies mobo possible, so well done. As for the scaremongering posts of how much fuel she will burn... well I am sure looking at Kawasaki's posts he's quite on the ball, but you can get quite far at 15knts and a displacement speed 7knts nice and relaxed and will burn a lot less.... and I am sure SWMBO will enjoy not having to head to wind, go about, reef, and gybe and getting wet and cold, so if she's happy, I am sure you will be. :)

A Nelson 42 is one of my absolute favourite boats so do post some pictures.

Lovely boat and good choice for ex raggie as they will still talk to you in yacht club bar which they won't do if you had bought a gin palace. I had a Broom with Sabre 275hp engines once. Good rugged engines but leaked a bit of oil. I would say 5 litres per hour per engine is spot on

at about 5 knots

Worry not, you will no longer have to spend a fortune on new sails every few years. It balances out in the end :D

No it doesn't - not even close IMHO - and experience. MOBO's are considerably more expensive to run than a cruising yacht - as opposed to one that races. However personally I think it's worth the extra expense, which is why I have recently returned after two years as a raggie, following 8 years in a mobo, following 8 years as a raggie and so on.......

Welcome to the "light side" and I am sure you will find it was a good decision.

T' pictures

Beautiful boat, lovely fella from the Nelson next door took us for a spin on her, very, very impressed. Mrs G like a chesire cat!!

Lots of smoke when cold but clear when warmed up, exausts are below the waterline on the sides version.

Now the lift out and survey!.

Thanks to all of you for the advice on fuel.

Super looking boat, Ian. But you're going to have trouble with that name. I can see it now, you manoeuvring into the dock with mrs iangrant poised to lassoo a cleat when a deep voice comes out of the engine compartment, "You don't need a bluddy bowthruster on a twin screw". :D
