Would anyone like to recommend this book? I need to eventually tune a Z spar single spreader masthead rig with lowers, middles and uppers plus baby stay - Tradewind 35. All the 8mm standing rigging is being replaced, starting from the bottom.

Many thanks

Yes it's the best guide to actually tensioning your rig I have found, highly educational, totally recommend it! I would suggest investing in a Loos gauge as well, you can always sell it easily.
I didn't know Tradewinds had baby stays, do you find it a nuisance? cheers Jerry

Messages received! A Loos gauge? I expected 1.8mm expansion per metre per tonne of load, therefore over 100mm = 0.18mm which I thought measurable with a vernier? A Loos for 8mm is £200. We'll see how we go. Tightening for 20% max breaking strain is about 1 tonne.

Many thanks.

The Dedekam book is OK. Most of it is about sail trimming. When it comes to rig tuning I'm not sure it tells you much - or any - more than Selden's free guide

I found the wire stretch method of measuring load quite unworkable. Loos gauge is very good. However they all agree the final test is to sail on the wind with a decent heel and see if your lee capstay is just about getting slack. That overrides the tension measurement that just give you a starting point.

Just to add my comment....it's a superb book. Well illustrated, concise and to the point. It doesn't suffer from what many sailing books do of using terms it hasn't defined so is good for the absolute beginner up. No rambling discussions: essential info and diagrams to illustrate it.

It's a thin book and the rig tuning section is only 18 pages (and copiously illustrated) which might not be what you want but it has served my needs very well to date.

Thought the book was turgid and brief. If you need rig tuning advice why not ask your rigger to quote on doing it- mine charged fifty quid to do the job with me present and explaining the process. The book is going to cost about fifteen quid on its own so not sure it's the best way to go. Personal opinion of course

£6.22 on Amazon.

Have you heard of a rig tension "meter" called SureCheck? Claims to be 10% accurate. It costs a fraction of the Loos device, approx £70 for 8mm wire.
