Hi all,

We completed the purchase last week of Charisma - a 38' Bavaria Ocean CC last Tuesday. I retired last Sunday and my wife quit yesterday. We plan to move aboard late March and then leave Portsmouth harbour and keep turning left (TY Sam Steele -plagiarism). We want to circumnavigate the UK and like the Grey Funnel we are voyaging towards ( not to) Falmouth for October. Winter there and then go South - towards the Med!
At the moment it still seems daunting but exciting. We're arranging renting out the house - getting the boat ready. Prioritising all over the place. Booking in our nearest and dearest before we go.

So pearls of wisdom or encouragement welcome

We already dream of slipping the lines for the first passage

How exciting for you both.

My immediate thought is what if you wish to have a break ashore for a while. You have no home to return to.

I'm planning something similar this summer before I get too old (very soon) but we want the option to return home occasionally if we need to, so keeping the house empty (ie not letting it).

It's the "Livaboard link" home is supposed to be the boat surely?
 
We calculate that it is cheaper to let out the bouse and pay for a hotel on the rare occasions we are back in the uk and not staying with friends.

Forget the house and rent it out at less you have some income , one bit of advise , you will have problems with repairs now and then , but try and find a good handly man who will sort the problems out for you and not leave it to an agent .
The few times we returned back we found people to stay with and once we rented a place for two weeks , it normal winter time people go back to sort things out and ere always summer hoildays let that are empty .

If you want to live aboard , just do it , we can always find reason why not to .

Welcome to the madness , I left last spring and wont be turning around in the foreseeable future, you might want to rethink staying the winter in falmouth though, it was one of the most expensive places i have ever left the boat, better to get across to Brittany and winter in Brest or Camaret its a 3rd of the price, or if you really want to stay on south coast of the Uk Plymouth is much cheaper than Falmouth, I also spent a long time on the mid river pontoons in Fowey in winter , that was lovely and peaceful ,but be prepared to move if the weather looks bad and you need to be completely self sufficient as no facilities.

Thanks for the tips so far.
The house needs to be let out or the mortgage company won't get paid! + it will provide a small income. I'm fortunate that my son works in commercial property and will manage it for us and I have a friend who is a professional tradesman & will do the maintenance tasks without fleecing me.
As for Falmouth thanks for the steer I'll pm you
