Not being a football follower, I watched it this evening out of some sense of duty (eh?). The expession that comes to mind is "snatched defeat from the jaws of victory".

However, the pundits say that England never do well in the first game. So there is hope. I will say that I think they were unlucky, cos they did seem to try very hard throughout the whole game.

If they had another four chaps on the pitch, made the ball the right shape and pick the bloody thing up and run with it, they would have done alot better.

Except that the boys with the odd shaped ball were just trounced by NZ. Gloom, at least there's the cricket test series to celebrate. I think that's why everyone is driving around with England flags.

Yeah, i thought about that, but from my limited geography, New Zealand wouldn't be involved in a European championship.

Also, by the looks of the pitch, the wicket was round (whats that all about?) and was also in a dreadful state. Needed about 3 weeks heavy rolling. The boundery was also small and square (worse than Taunton).

Have you noticed the dreadful flag etiquette on motor vehicles too? COLREGS too, I was on a starboard tack through the M27/M3 interchange and shouted "STARBOARD" at several lorries and they just carried on, causing me into an alarming crash gybe.

Sorry to see that they will be carrying on in the competition. I was hoping that the defeat meant that they were OUT and would be coming back, together with the English yob spectators. This might have helped save England's reputation.

Sad thing is that the Kiwi's were playing with a VERY diminished bowling attack...think 5 of their best bowlers were not available.

As for the Rugby...well...I guess that we had to give our antipodean cousins a bit of encouragement, they must ALL still be terribly disappointed after the World Cup!!

Not so sure about the 15 man game given the weekend's results. Perhaps with a smaller ball and an assortment of bits of wood?
