It\'s cold today!!

I had to move a Phantom 40 from our yard round to Swanwick Marina this morning. After trying to remove the ice from outside - and inside the lower helm position and relising I was onto a losing battle I decided to brave the cold and move it from the flybridge. Ah, I noticed, the steering wheel had been removed for transportation. So I had two options - 1)go back to the lower helm and drive in semi blindness or 2) helm from the flybridge. I took the second option and moved the boat round just on engines.

On arriving at the holding pontoon in preparation for the lift ............. well a Phantom 40 makes a pretty good ice breaker. Yup, the water on the River Hamble at Swanwick Marina was actually frozen this morning! Now that is cold!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I wonder what the salinity of the Hamble is up at Bursledon? The ice makes a fantastic noise, doesn't it!

Also, did you centre the rudders from the lower helm first or just work with whatever position they happened to be in.

We had -7 in Oxfordshire last night. I got home at just after 1 am and had to move the Christmas tree out to the the compost heap. That was cold enough for me.

Yup, the water on the River Hamble at Swanwick Marina was actually frozen this morning! Now that is cold!!!!!!!!!

Is that the first time you've seen it like that? I remember back in the winter of 63 the sea water freezing off the Kent coast, not solid but lots of ice. But we also had huge snow drifts which so far we don't have, but again from memory the worst of the weather was Feb/March time when it always seems to get colder. So not out of the woods yet..............

I remmber 1993 when faversham creek froze over ! I do have a picture somewhere which I could scan in?

Still, I'm taking a Windy Kamsin up to Essex Boatyards on Thursday and bringing a Targa 43 back, so I'll take some pix then. It was bloody cold at half past eight Sunday morning also, Beaulieu river at the top end where fresh meets salt.
