SHMBO was dissapointed we couldnt get closer , she was looking forward to seeing the yank sailors , cant think why /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Brilliant photos, thank you for posting them.
That certainly is an enormous beast for sure - I guess there cannot be too many harbours that she (he?) can get into.

And only harbours with a small tidal range I suppose, otherwise those enormous overhangs are bashing the quay (?), unless they use those pontoons like what that refuelling tanker seems to be berthed against.

There doesnt seem to be any uniformity to the overall design though - it looks as if bits have been added, chopped and changed over the years, with all the various appendages sticking out everywhere.

And looking at the bow view photo, I cant help but start wondering why they never built aircraft carriers as catamarans, or even trimarans - the stability on this beast must be a nightmare, especially the free surface effects on the hanger deck if eg the fire hydrants are let off (or do they have Flexi Fog systems now?)

Bet it does not look that big when you're on final approach in your F16 !

lol. Flown a deck landing sim ages ago, the deck is only a few pixels until you feel you are pant stainingly close then suddenly its all there. BTW, dont ask me to be the pilot if you need to get down and walk away, based on sim rating I am not a good choice:-)

The Military Aviation spotters were also busy taking down aircraft numbers , Here is the list of all the aircraft noted on the ship ( sorry no F16s)

I'm guessing the main reason they're not cats is that they need the interior volume of a monohull for all the hangars etc. Yes, Cat would in theory provide extra stability, but where the hell would they put everything?

Re a cat carrier

Re all the interior volume needed for hangers (that is an impressive list above of aeroplanes on board), I was thinking, looking at the bow view, if they built a catamaran the same overall beam as the carrier on deck, then they should be able to have enough interior volume.

The problem then would most probably be that they would have to build a special dry dock for it, as no existing dry dock would be wide enough. Perhaps the same dry dock that they build the vessel in?

A pal of mine is a weapons systems engineer in Portsmouth, and one of his jobs is to come up with alternative ideas - he proposed a carrier with (I think) the island in the middle, and runways each side. But perhaps the bosses were not too keen on this idea.

Re: Re a cat carrier

Just thought of another possible reason. With these things being built and operated from Virginia, do they need to transit the Panama canal? Can they do so? It's a long way around to the pacific otherwise.

Re: Re a cat carrier

too wide in the beam /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifI always think about the crew numbering at 6000 at times must be like a city not a ship

Re: Re a cat carrier

Ive been aboard two of these. somewhere I still have the visitor leaflets with all the '12 million miles of cable' etc oh yes they are towns afloat with hairdressers and shopping malls just like a low budget cruise ship. However they are all no smoking or alcohol on board ever :-( not like on the brit boats where guests are invited to share the rum ration (red death) and then be ceremoniously poured onto the harbour wall. by the way which one is this?
