Re: 1600ltrs

Whilst I fully respect your choice, couldnt you have driven to Dartmouth if time was such an issue?

I say this because I for one spend all week tearing around, up against time deadlines. Sailing or boating should be for relaxation. We too just crossed the channel from Yarmouth to Alderney, motored all the way at about 6.5 knts. The worst bit was the noise of the engine, but we read, kept watch, had a nice bit of lunch etc. Relaxed.

Trip back, 18 - 20 knts of wind on the beam, clear blue skies, bit of a chop on the sea. Did 7.5 - 8.5 knts, averaged 6.6 knts from Cherbourg to Northney. Still a lot lot slower than a mobo, but what a blast!

This is not being critical of mobo speeds etc, I go slower, but that suits me. For me its the relaxation not the speed and the money I save! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: 1600ltrs

Good point about speed.

I chose a Trawler type so I could be on the water more but still have the ability to get home when needed.

Had a great time cruising at 8 knots at the weekend, you see so much more of what is going on around you. I can do double that but what's need.

Had a sit down breakfast with friends while cruising before. (With lookout posted!)

When the weather is bad then it's a different matter.

Re: 1600ltrs

Indeed I could have driven, it certainly would have been cheaper... in fact I could have flown for much less than the fuel... but,

The real joy was meeting friends and family down there and spending a very relaxing Sat and most of Sun on the water. If I ad drive I'd have had no boat to enjoy.

As for the noise I am in ful agreement with you; my only real complaint about a mobo is the constant drone of the diesels.. very tiresome..... for peace and tranquility and the shear enjoyment of the "journey", give me sail any day!

Better stop before I talk myself into a buying a Oyster.

Re: 1600ltrs

This is interesting. Like, I suspect many/most sailors I had little idea of the numbers involved in mobo'ing. The lack of range surprised me, but the really interesting bit is that it is similar to what I get with my auxiliary (50l main tank + 2 X 10l bottles giving c. 60 hours @ 6 kn i.e. c. 350nm). Is this just coincidence or do most diesel engined boats end up with similar range? I feel a poll coming on:

If you have diesel engine(s), main propulsion or auxiliary, what is your expected range based on full tanks and maintaining economical cruising speed in reasonably flat water?

750 for me

topped up at 40p per litre, at £1 it gets painfull for me, however out on Wild Thing in a race last week we were down to 1knot, that was more painfull, especially if you want to get somewhere, I might go for a motor cruiser with a decent size diesel BUT how much are sails and lanyards, not cheap either I bet

Re: 1600ltrs

SOme really informative replies. Thanks Derf- yours was just an example I saw- it was no personal comment because we all choose what to do with our disposable income, whatever it may be. It's all compromises. I've made my choices.

Alex

Re: 1600ltrs

Alex no problem. your post does make me think of the sanity of £800 to fill the tanks when I know I could probably sail a whole season for that amount of diesel....

On a much wider issue though, think of the poor farmers and hauliers who rely on gas oil for thier tractors and trucks! there has been a 150% increase in the price of gas oil over the last 18mths!

Thankfully I do it for pleasure and don't have to rely on supplyfor my living. At least I have the choice to stay in the marina and not spend the money.

Re: It\'s a different world in MOBO land.

There are some weekends where it would be great to just blat over to France, spend the wekend there, then get home for Sunday night, In that situation, if you compare fuel costs to the ferry for a trip to Brittany, it actually works out quite well, relatively speaking. I can really see the appeal and there are times when I'd like to be able to pick and choose.

Re: It\'s a different world in MOBO land.

Not comparable, but under 2 hours, and less than 1 litre per mile, which is better than my car does? <g> and that's petrol boat, not diesel.
