Itinerary mallorca

Me and six other gadgies are about to embark on a weeks sailing charter in Mallorca I was busy putting together a very rough Itinerary of our proposed route but can't make my mind up what to do. Should we just do the east coast or the east coast plus a night or two on menorca or should we circumnavigate, if so which way is best.
Also has anyone got any advice on which ports, anchorages we should use and where we should avoid.
I bought an old pilot book from a forumite and I'm busy thumbing through that, but given that it is very old its only really usefull for mileage and anchoring and even they could now be out of date.
we would also like to get some hectic /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif nightlife in as well as a few /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif quiet nights as the age range is 17-54 i'd like to keep everybody happy.

Ta! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Itinerary mallorca

Palma, Arenal, Porto Ponsa, Magalug (Shaguluf) for the lively parts

Andraitx beautiful, English and good marina.

Alcudia, Pollensia, Cala D'or, Sans Salinas or anywhere further East for a prettier and quieter life.

Soller on North Coast if enough time, lovely but can be exposed.

Re: Itinerary mallorca

Go the route Steve reccomends, plus when at cala ratjada, pop over to Menorca, lovely spot, go into Mahon.
Although I wouldnt bother with magaluf! [--word removed--] hole! I personally wouldnt bother with Palma either too much in a weeks charter, where does it start, this charter?
Soller is a bit of a hike and theres only soller! Lovely place though. But in a sailboat, you wont have enough time for both coasts.

Re: Itinerary mallorca

30nm a day is fine, once you get round the corner, up the coast it's like 15-20 miles a day to very pleasant anchorages and ports, you'll love it.

Re: Itinerary mallorca

others sugest perfectly good places to stop.

I think a mallorca circumnavigation is a fine idea. If/when the wind blows hard, it will be likely from the N to W, so if fine for first few days then do the NW coast asap hence clockwise from Palma would be Plan A.

Otherwise if very windy to start you can loiter on the southern coast, with nice blue water anchorages down at SE tip and perhaps try northwards from there to alcudia once things calm down.

Altho many think the med sea a doddle as it is nice and sunny, the truth is that winds and seas can be often untenable for a smallish yacht, and the short-period waves mean short-period holes to fall into with much crashing and banging. F9 in an ocean would be much less horrid than an f9 in the med. So I would only half-plan a circumnavigation essentially on the hoof as things pan out, rather than promise the crew a circumnavigation or set it as a target at this stage. Thus instead of deciding where you wanttogo, you change your mind depending on where and how the wind blows, and yar booh to the weather gods.

Unless the boat is big and bashity and the whole crew very rah rah rah, i would probably not bother go to Menorca - 80 or so miles away for er another island with less facilities, so bit pointless imho for short charter.

I would plan early starts and have sailing done in time for late lunch, hence early out from the marinas and early in, much better than pratting about hoping for a space later in the day. The general form seems to be to go into the marina and have lunch and then see someone after lunch (ie after 3 - 3.30pm) rather than do any vhf before going in.

The spanish give mobile phone numbers for coastal boats needing emergency services, better response than on ch16 it seems so get those numbers before leaving.

Re: Itinerary mallorca

If you are into shipping history then SAILING into Mahon is a must.

Soller is wonderful, but go by the mountain train. When we were there one of the Bavaria charter boats tried it and came back without the mast. In general attempting anything on the NW coast is nuts if you have a short timescale. It is a line of 3000ft mountains that does a wonderful job of concentrating the Northerlies.

Re: Itinerary mallorca

Make sure you get your charter company to make a reservation and get a licence for Cabrera (must not be missed).

If going on to Menorca then I have always found a stop in Porto Petro is a good place to start. There is a good achorage just ourtide the small inner harbour, which is reserved for residents. Dinghy ashore for restaurants and victuals. I usually do a night crossing from there to Ciudadella, my favourite port in the Balearics. (it saves a complete day).
