Does anybody know of a source of mail-order SIM cards for Italy (Wind, Tim, Vodafone)? I would like to buy a data card in advance of arriving in Italian waters as I don't really want to go ashore unless I have to.
It has to be registered against an Italian address and tax code (codice fiscal) which is normally done at the shop where you buy it. I got one posted to me by a friend in Italy who conjured up a CF and address for me. But that was about 8 years ago - they may have more sophisticated computer systems now.
You do normally need a codice fiscale to buy an Italian sim, which I would imagine would reduce their availability online. Also, be wary of sim card vending machines (such as those found in service stations, particularly near ports, airports, etc.) as the cards may well be out of date! I had this with a Tim card, but fortunately the vending machine owner was good enough to give a full refund. I had to go to an Italian Tim shop to find out why my sim card wasn't working, and I eventually bought a replacement in the conventional manner - i.e.: over the counter!
What do you mean a SIM data card ? Do you mean a pre loaded set amount internet card i.e for a tablet and internet access, or do you mean a full blown mobile fone SIM ?
If you just need a Data Card you only need an Italian address and a photocopy of your driving license or passport, you can use mine if you want or better still send me 150 urini's and i'll pick you one up, it supplies 5 Gb per month and lasts for one year they do a lesser one too at i think 100€ For 2Gb a month, i got one myself only last week. if you need a full blown SIM fone card as stated above you need a CF number AND an Italian address AND they need to Photocopy your driving licence and PASSPORT AND A RECENT BILL WITH YOUR PROOF OF ADDRESS !! This i wont do as its too much hassle but i'll gladly pick you up a preloaded data card.
I wouldn't buy a 3 (tre) SIM unless it's coverage has improved a lot recently; it was not good outside urban areas. Wind and TIM had good coverage - I had a Wind SIM. (There was a time when Wind SIMs were cheap for data across Europe; alas too many people found out.)
If you buy on ebay make sure you know how to activate it.
TIM is best, also Vodafone Italia, i have a TIM sim in my tablet and a vodafone Italia in my fone, ive never not been able to get a signal and that includes travelling all over Italy. Wind is not bad pretty good coverage but not as good as the above, the missus has a wind sim, once in a blue moon she pops out with "can i borrow your fone love?"
