Italian Summer Layover

Elba

In Portoferraio (a fabulous anchorage by the way) there is a marina/boatyard where people we met regularly had there boat lifted for the summer months at reasonable rates. I think it's either Esaom Cesa and the number in the Italian Waters Pilot on page 103 is 0565 919 309 www esaom.it or it's Edinautica Marina 0565 919 309. Elba is only a ferry ride from Rome and the airport. There are also some moorings which you might be able to use. And Elba is stunning! A walker's paradise. We spent 3 weeks anchored in Portoferraio and used the local transport to walk the entire length of the island. Good luck.

Castelsardo

In 2008 I tried to leave my boat for July/August but they would not agree - they get more from day visitors and seem to have a policy of keeping so many berths free for this time of year. In June they were charging about 20 euros for 12 m. NE coast in 2009 was 100 euros upwards a day in July August as far south as Olbia (if you could get in!!). As has been mentioned Arbatax will lift out cheaper.

Marina St Elmo in Cagliari was one of the only places we found willing to give a monthly rate in the high season. 600e per month for 12m. Most marinas want to charge the much higher daily rates. Portescuso would be even better value but you have to be there to negotiate and space is only available when permanent berthholders are away. Lift and storage is complicated by some yards closing for August holidays.

Have you though of San Remo. It's a lot further North bit we were offered very reasonable rates and they did have numerous vacancies.

Some excellent info here for you. basically Italy in July and August is to be avoided at all costs. yes there are posssibilities but the chances of arranging anything in advance are about nil and you will be subjecting yourself to huge frustration. Also as roaring girl said -you will have to rush through and miss some great sights along the way. And if you get holed up somewhere in bad weather for a week and its 150 euros a night you will regret it even more.
If I were you, unless you are in a desparate rush, I would tarry a while in the south of France and enjoy yourselves and set off through Italy on the first day of September.

it was me who startd this thread a couple of years ago -

worked well for us !

we left the boat in a good yard about half a mile up the Arno river (PISA).

Close to the town/airport -

the yard is called ARNOVECCHIO - and the owner is Ms. ORSINI who speaks english well and is a fine chap!

Prices were very reasonable too!
