Last time out first mate said there was a thump whilst we were cruising at 20+ knots between codless fishing spots. A quick look over the transom and all looked fine, but subsequently I thought there may have been a bit of vibration...
Boat lifted yesterday morning and one of the props looked like this..

No idea what I hit but it clearly wasn't a fleeing cod. The rear four bladed prop is thankfully clean. Lucky for me, the last prop I wrecked was the rear so I have a spare front prop. Leg oil and bellows being changed on Monday, so am hoping for no more nasty surprises.

Anodes all in good shape and no other corrosion on outdrives.

I suppose it is possible the blade failed and the thump was the chunk of blade smacking the underneath of the swim platform.

It's an ali Volvo prop. The red is Hammerite undercoat where the black paint has worn away, as it always does. Anodes were fine.

That's where the hammerite has cracked; no crater, honest. I know the prop looks a mess, but this is how they always come out. A coupe of hours and they clean up fine, new coat of paint and they looks good as new. Except not this one of course.

Edit - Looked like this when boat last went in

My props, all four of them*, have been repaired umpteen times(5/6/7/8 +) and the fracture at the end looks just like that after we have touched something.
Normally braks off athe weak spot along the weld.
*Have spare pair which in a previous life started out as the rear props on a duo prop set up.

Don't look corroded to me. Anodes being in good shape isn't neccesarily a good thing though - I am mightily reassured that mine have corroded badly this season cos it means they are doing thier job (lost a set of props to corrosion season before last).

Got a similar problem with a dinged prop though. Last trip of the season was an absolute nightmare - extremely rough, wife very ill etc. With all that I forgot that we experienced a bang at 20+ knots. No subsequent vibration but a few weeks ago I checked the props for corrosion while the boat was still in the water and was horrified to find big chunks out of two blades on one duoprop. Thought the corrosion was back but having lifted out it is clearly impact damage.

Anyone got a B6 forward prop going spare... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

What do you use to paint the transom part of the outdrive? It looks different to the grey of the drive?

I tend to spray mine all over with Trilux, is there a better option?

Thats not the end of the world, had both my sets of Duoprops repaired last year one had a similar bite missing, £90 for a pair £180 for all four.

Interesting they can be fixed; I thought an ali prop with that damage would be a write off. Where do you get them fixed?

jimg - just a trick of the light; all spayed with trilux.

By the sounds of it chunks of blade breaking off is a common occurance. Maybe I've been lucky to have gone five seasons without it happening.

Steel Developments - £36.50 + VAT and delivery. Not bad at all.

Not sure about a thousand other places - googled up a couple more that can fix ali duoprops /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do you know anywhere that can fix busted forum burgees? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
