Issues with Sailspar reefing system

Hi, anyone got any suggestions. I had the system installed a couple of years ago but have found increasingly that in high winds it is sometimes impossible to keep sufficient tension on the reefing lines to prevent the drum from rotatating and wrapping the reefing lines around the forestay.

how do you secure the tail of the reefing loop ?
my set up came with a simple cleat, just secure the spare line on that, it has never wrapped round the drum, yet.
i dont sail in a F12 ....

Used the system on a Jaguar 25 for 17 years, and no problems. :encouragement:

Many thanks both. Yes I secure the reefing line on the cleat. Just hear from the rigger who installed and suggests may be a screw lose between link plates (on the system that is not me - at least I think that's what he meant - so will investigate.

I replaced the cleat with a Rutgerson Clutch - just pull in the rope and it stays there, no need to cleat it. I had to use a Rutgerson clutch because at the time it was the only one available that you could dismantle and attach to an endless rope - in fact I was in a local chandlery when it was being demonstrated by the rep and I bought it immediately. Spinlock do a version now. Transformed reefing.

Hi Simon,

Very useful piece of information as not everyone has or wants to use a cleat. Having been tried and tested and coming as a recommendation we will pass this on to our customers if they encounter the same situation.

The drum should not rotate. It does sound as though the locking screw is either loose or has come out. If you still have an issue please contact the Sailspar office - 01206 251348 as we have a sketch we can send you showing the location of this screw.

I assume this issue has been rectified but if you do require any advice/information feel free to call in.

The set up I acquired with my boat has both lines cleated together at the cockpit - ie round the same cleat at the same time. I have never had the issue you describe, but in my first season I did have problems with the drum rotating inside the rope, which I solved by making sure there was reasonable tension on the "unfurl" side of the line when cleating them off.
