Isola Pianosa (Tuscan archipelago)

I am passage planning and it would be convenient to make a anchor stop (no need to land) off Isola Pianosa. My pilot is rather out of date and it is being shown as a prison island with no designated anchorages (no prohibitions that I can see, either, other than no landing).

Is this still a place to avoid, or could it be useful as an overnight stop?

Actually, I was told a couple of years ago that anchorage is not allowed both in Pianosa and Montecristo (because of the natural park, nothing to see with the prison anymore).
But don't take my word for it, that's just hearsay as I told.
 
Thank you. My old pilot says that you need to get permission from Elba to anchor off Montecristo -- don't know if that is still possible, but won't help us as we are coming from Rome.

My Rod Heiklel Italian waters pilot (July 2006 version) indicates a Zone A exclusion zone around Isola Pianosa (to beyond the 20m contour): it's designated as a National Park, so no anchoring there I guess.

Montecristo also is Zone 1: pilot says anchoring prohibited except in emergency and with permission from Elba.
 
Thanks, Ian Have to do it another way, then. Probably hug the coast and then to Elba as we want to plan short hops but we did Elba on the way down.
 
A bit to the North, Isola Capria is to be recommended. It has a set of "Three Line" mooringsin along the south side of the Porto.There are basic facilities including a small supermarket ashore. Nice place.

Also remember that Marciana Marina on Elba is free whereas Portoferraio is expensive unless you anchor outside and don't leave the boat. But I think you know all that stuff!!!!

Just to elaborate.
At Capria there is a twin trot of 10 moorings per side, each of which has an upstand carrying three lines. Regardless of the side you wish to use you reverse up to the buoy and take the red line to port and the green to starboard as your stern lines and then sprint to the bow with the other line which is attached to a mooring block.
Its a brilliant system and a very efficient use of space but I haven't seen it used elsewhere.
This may save a bit of head-sctratching when you arrive!!
 
Hi Lemain and ors, Don't be tempted in Isola Capria to anchor outside the pier with others on Starboard hand looking in. Holding is bad and does not last in any weather at all. (kissing others in the night was my experience!) Whereas under the cliffs looks more daunting, this must be where saltwater_gypsy means. Also it was 2004 ish when I was doing the transit to Corsica and things may have improved.Upon return trip I had very rough water getting off the shelf in a Westerly 6/7 , better when in the middle, and not repeated on the approaches to Marciana Marina, which is really just a good harbour in this wind direction. Any news re the terrible earthquake at or near l\Aquila?

As for the effect of the earthquake down here on the Fiumicino canal, no effect here at all. Not a ripple. However, heavy rain over there tends to find its way here after 24/36 hours.
 
Thanks for that....while perfectly logical I have never seen it before and would have been scratching my head. Still might be if we arrive at night!
