Isn\'t technology wonderful

My mobile 'phone has just survived a 40deg wash cycle! My own fault - too many pockets in my breeks. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Took out the battery and SIM and let it dry for 24 hours, put it back together and it's fine so far - touch wood. Definitely above and beyond the call of duty.

What brand was the phone ?
SWMBO's phone disappeared into a pint of mineral water yesterday. Several mouths agape for several seconds in the bar while we watched it still work. She took it out , dried it under a hand dryer and it came back to life again. God bless Nokia !!!

Re: Isn\'t technology wonderful

I fell off the side of my boat last year, and phone (Nokia) went too. It didn't survive, screaming an unearthly wail and vibrating as it died.

Removed and replaced battery, washed with fresh water and dried, but still as dead as Chairman Mao. Fortunately, corporate phone replacement dept were none the wiser...

my Nokia communicator survived a drop to water/clygol bucket, seawater spray on summer holiday, first childs drawl, automatic water tap in pubs toilet but it didn't survive a drop from 30cm hight to a carpet /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My son managed to drop his phone in the River Cam whilst punting.
They had just returned to the punt hire station.
He managed to retrieve it by standing in the river up to his neck and feeling around for it with his bare feet!

He brought it home and dried it out as machurley22.
it worked and survived for another 2 years until he dropped it in the River Dart.
4m deep and he could not reach it with his feet!

Fresh water doesn't seem to do too much harm if you dry them out quick.

It's the salt in sea water that seems to destroy them. I've salvaged a few after sea water dunkings by removing battery and flushing thoroughly in fresh water before drying, but I've had several that haven't responded to this treatment - usually the battery shorts out and blows the phone - as witnessed by crackling and fizzing noise coming from my pocket!

They seem to stand up pretty well to washing powder and fabric conditioner too. Mind you it was thoroughly rinsed and spun at 1200rpm! I did also wonder if the fact that the battery was nearly discharged had helped it survive.

Remember reading about a famous french sailor's mode of fixing failed electronics, boiled it in fresh water & dried, if it still did'nt work, sling it.

Re: Isn\'t technology wonderful

Jep, wash cycles tend to be ok (quite benign compared to some of the stuff they are put through!). Mind you, some fabric conditioners/softeners can gum up the keyboard if it gets underneath, so rinse well!

Salt water tends to be a killer if the phone is immersed. Only possibility is to remove the battery quick (as in very first thing to do!), then remove everything possible (sim card, MMC card, remmovable covers...), soak in fresh water and dry. Even then it's not guaranteed. Immersion time is important, the longer it's in, the less possibility of it ever working again...
