Isle of Wight - which way around..?

for newbies I wouldn't go round. It's a sixty mile passage give or take and that's long. Wind also look light - F3 most of the time, maybe 4. and northerly and cold which could make it a really long passage.

My advice would be to sail up and down the solent. Go to see the needles then maybe anchor inside hurst for lunch or even pop up to lymington town quay for a short stay. then another sail back finishing in cowes between 5 and 6. Leave them wanting more.

We ended up doing exactly that - had a cracking weekend just a couple of mates doing some simple sailing.

Thanks to everyone who shared!

Two options from Gossie are an Westward sail to Studland, cracking sail across the bay for a bevy in the pub and back for curry. Or Eastward for a trip to East Head, some water sports and back for the vindaloo. Either way the sailing will be interesting, scenic and a nice lunch stop. RTI just for the sake of it will be a lot of calculations and tweaking but not much actual fun and they'll not thank you if the curry is missed!

... What boat were you on?

We chartered the Canberra Star from Commodore Yachting.

On Saturday we departed around 9am, had lunch in Newton National Trust area and were rafting in Cowes (Shepards Warf) in good time for shower and a curry at Saffron (recommended by the boat we were rafted to) - it's a nice restaurant with good service, I should have gone for my regular choice but the others were very happy!

Sunday we 'discovered' Yarmouth on foot - on the lookout out for potential ideas / locations to bring wives and children. Lunched on the boat here and then back in Gosport by 4pm to hand the boat back and head home.

We're already planning our next trip and I am keen to try some of the suggestions in this thread...

Sounds like a good weekend, that's exactly the sort of itinerary I had in mind in post 14 :encouragement:

Wish I'd been out there instead of hanging upside down in an anchor locker with a mouthful of cable ties :)

I would not expect to make Studland and back in 1 day? We only got 4-6kts boat speed from 8-12kts wind speed on the day.

25 miles door to door, favourable tides all the way both ways IF they coincide with your departure time, speed over ground of about 6-7 knots average if you have the tide. Great scenery and lovely in a northerly.

Blimey £1045 for a weekend - that's an expensive curry!

That's why charter boats are always packed with people to divide the price between. As students we used to get ten on a ratty old 38-footer for a week, and the price per person was very reasonable :)

Well I think I would rather stick with my beautiful Sadler 25 which I can have all to myself for around £2000 for a whole year.
