Isle of Man

swamped at port erin

there was a link to a you tube film last year - a cat was swamped and sunk on the visitor mooring at Port Erin by a Westerly swell

Nice beach though - take the train with the kids and have a bucket and spade day -they'll love it.

Derby Haven is a nice place for a few days with kids if the wind is from S or W - need to row ashore. Nice beaches and walks.

Any advice on rounding langness to get to Castletown?

There is a strong race descending south of Langness, so either come through it at high water slack, or give it good clearance and approach from SSW. You can sail between the race and Langness, but it requires confidence. The race varies from not much to downright vicious depending on conditions.

There is a bell buoy in the bay, keep a bit to Starboard of it when coming in and head directly for the harbour entrance.

Whilst most access is by ladder, there are steps in the middle harbour just by the pub, so you could dinghy round to them if needed, and there is a small slip at the north end of each of the outer, middle and inner harbours which you could use with a dinghy and keep feet dry.

The bottom is stony in places and the harbour is totally drying. Check with the harbourmaster in advance http://www.gov.im/transport/harbours/ports/castletownport.xml (Tony)

The beer is excellent, I prefer Bushy's to Okells.
