Isle Martin is a small island only 5 miles from Ullapool on the way to the Summer Isles. It's not permanently inhabited but there are a few unimproved old houses to visit from when it was, a small museum & a part time café. There is a pontoon that the ferry uses but it has plenty of space & they welcome visiting boats who can help contribute to maintenance costs.

There's plenty of depth & space for 3 boats alongside, up to 14m on the NE side & 2 10m boats on the SW side; more than that & it's rafting. Closest to the shore on the NE side is reserved for the ferry (the small open boat in the picture). Strangely they are not in Welcome Anchorages or pilot books so visitor numbers are low & they'd like more, hence the plug I'm giving them here.

The bay is sheltered from most directions although not so much from NE to SE. It's a community trust that runs the island so every little bit of income helps.

There's no electricity available & no rubbish disposal, but there is the wackiest hot shower I've ever seen. It's firewood heated. First you have to go & find your firewood, light the fire under the tank, & wait. It's outside too, but the water is certainly hot!

Isle Martin was gifted to the RSPB by the lady who formerly owned it and they had a warden on it for a few years, (nesting red footed? divers), they put in the pontoon, to give the warden access, she would have brought you milk if she was going to the shop in the morning. They did up some of the houses for members to visit but they were rarely used; about five years ago they lost interest and gifted the island to a much less wealthy local nature group based ( I recall) in Ullapool. We have been there a few times and prefer it for an overnight to Ullapool but have not done a lot to publicize its benefits for selfish reasons. Last time we were there at a weekend and it was quite busy, there were a variety of boats round from U'pool. The shower is a new feature, bit like the semi outdoor ones on Rum.
