Island plastics 23\' info

Hi all

A friend of mine is considering buying an IP23. Has anybody here got any experience of them? Yeah he knows he won't be breaking any speed records. Any info on handling at sea, how stable they are, any body done any long passages in one?
Any info at all would be welcome.

Hi The IP 23 is a very stable and seaworthy hull and the manufacturing quality was good.
I spent 6 months aboard one in all weather conditions while carrying out a tidal survey on the lower Clyde and never once did I have cause for concern

I've got an IP24 - practically the same boat. Built like a panzer, layup quality is superb - no IP23 / 24 has ever suffered osmosis to my knowledge - if a bit rough on the inside. Not fast - 6/7 kts is all the hull will do, despite what engine she's got, so anything over 40hp is wasted. Upside is 4ltrs an hour fuel consumption.

The motor sailers are capacious. The IPs have a 9' beam which also makes mooring fees (based on length) excellent value per cubic foot of accommodation.

Hello there, I have just bought an IP 23 with a Perkins 4.107 engine but she doesn't steer going astern (in reverse) or am I doing something wrong?
 
Welcome to the forum.

Short answer is no, you are not doing anything wrong. Long keel takes a lot to make it change direction and the rudder is ineffective without any waterflow over it.
 
IP23 hulls were I think sold in various states of completion: some (maybe many) may not have had the ballast in when sold, this being left to the (often amateur) buyers for home completion. Stability may thus vary between individual boats depending on how much ballast was installed, and if a sailing version what rig. Most were just motorboats.
 
The IP 23'24 was 'designed' in the late 60's when Bill Waight left Uffa Fox and was up at Dickies yard in Tarbert,

Almost all sloop rigged and sail well at around 5/6 knots but can roll in heavy weather and need about 2 knots headway to tack under sail only
 
We used to fish from an IP23 from Haverigg Cumbria, it always seemed a really good boat, donk donked along at six knots, not the sailing version of course, but a lot of IP 23/24 were used by local inshore fisherman for potting and gill netting, they seemed a well respected simple boat.
