Island blown away!

An island in the North Pacific, NW of Hawaii, has been been removed by a hurricane.

Chip Fletcher, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Hawaii, described the loss as 'a huge blow'!

This is an exceptional example but it is not unknown.

There is a pass known as Loup-Garou through the reef on the east coast of Martinique. At one time it was marked by an islet called Caye Mitan on its south side. This was still shown on Admiralty charts published in the '90's, though in fact it had been washed away by a hurricane 50 years previously. Instead, a new islet (now called Caye Loup-Garou) had recently formed on the north side of the pass.

Beware the unwary! We spotted the islet, and with a chart out half a mile with GPS, decided to use it as reference for the pass, which we assumed was on the north side of the islet. With the trade wind behind us, we crashed right up on the reef. One of the times I have blessed a steel hull, as we dragged ourselves over into deeper water.
