Is YM getting too posh??

Flipping through this months issue which just dropped through my letter slot this am... I found myself getting quiet annoyed at how posh the thing has become... HR on the cover, more HR's used for stuff on the inside... Yet another article by a journalist showing off his unfeasibly large posh boat....another cruise on a new Ancona 430..... More on a ovni... Another hr being reviewed in the new boats... And then the final insult, some posh student taking the family Sweden yacht on a Scottish cruise.

Is it just me or is the mag becoming increasingly out of tune to the average middle aged middle class used production boat owner??

What happened to the normal sailors?

Anyways... In that bit about short handed sailing.... Did you see the size of the marina berth he was coming into??? You could park HMS Dauntless on there... And it's not exactly tight is it??

Not a marina berth that I recognise. Harrumph.

A couple of years ago I was walking up from the visitors pontoon in Calais. The chap at the top (Dick Durham) asked if I was off one of the boats, I replied yes and pointed out my Cutlass 27. He asked if I would do a quick interview and picture at my chart table for a series he was running - I laughed and said my chart table was a piece of plywood with the chart held on by elastic straps so I either sat with it on my knee or when rough put it on the bunk and knelt on the cabin sole.

Oh he replied - that is more PBO than YM!
 
I have always reckoned YMis for boats above 34 ft, PBO for those below. Must agree YM getting a little too upmarket for me. I agree with the comments above about mooring. All these how to come into a berth are always alongside a open pontoon and never in a tight space as is the most common for most of us. Rarely buy them these days, pos because I have a lot more knowledge now and most of it is repeats.
 
Won't buy it this month then! I also look at Sailing Today in the newsagents and buy a copy if it interests me. Since the takeover I don't think I have bought an issue, am I right in thinking that it has gone "posh" too?

That rather assumes that the owners of larger boats don't want to be practical. My problem is that PBO overlaps YM too much; PBO should be a purely practical magazine, and leave all the "marinas in the Solent, yet again" nonsense to YM. I don't plan on renewing my subscription to the latter, I've got three or four issues still in their wrappers.
 
Boats have got bigger and more expensive. The magazines has scaled up similarly.

Not sure whether YM was ever aimed at "the average middle aged middle class used production boat owner". That sounds a lot more like like PBO to me.
 
I have been buying the Sailing Today for a number of years; but I cancelled my subscription (although still receiving it) because the emphasis now is towards new large yachts with an enormous amount of advertising and promotions.

Won't buy it this month then! I also look at Sailing Today in the newsagents and buy a copy if it interests me. Since the takeover I don't think I have bought an issue, am I right in thinking that it has gone "posh" too?

Hardly, Snooks of this Parish has a fairly old Sadler 32 which is seldom OFF the cover
 
I think YM is still broadly serving the same readership as it used to but that readership has changed. I realised this many years ago when they described a 36-footer as a "family boat". Since then I have upgraded to 34ft, so I can't complain.

I tend to see lots of boats described in the 40'+ range but I don't think I shall upgrade again.

The HRs in this month don't seem over-posh; the old 352 inside would be within many people's budget nowadays.

On my boat there is a small 'Yachting Monthly Classics Rally 1999' plaque so think YMs average boat size has got bigger. When Cutlass's were first out (end of the 60's / early 70s) 27' was a big family boat!!

How we used to lust after Contessa 26s when we had a 22-footer!
