Is Wilco (Wilkinsons) Diesel engine oil good enough?

I have just bought a boat with a Yanmar 2QM15 and don't know the exact oil spec. This got me looking at the cost of oil for my boat and cars, Discovery 200Tdi and Peugeot 306 Tdi. Car specs are 15W-40..

In Wilco (who are very cost effective for most items) Castrol GTX Diesel 10W-40 costs £14.99 for 4 (Yes new size four!) litres. Spec says API CF, ACEA A3/B3, VW505 00, MB 229.1.

Wilco's own Diesel oil 15W-40 costs £7.99 for 5 litres and the spec is API CF4, ACEA B2.

I have no wish to short change my engines but is not the Wilco own brand perfectly good enough for my boat and car engines? Both cars have turbos but the Disco is 1992 and the Peugeot 1995, and have both done around 115,000 miles.

I have always taken the advice given by Bukh to use a mineral oil in a regular diesel, it is more tolerant of marine conditions. Diesel grade is indicated.

Personally, I have scouted round to get a major brand oil - usually Castrol - on deal in Asda etc - it can be about the same price as Wilco's own cost reduced brand.

Best of all, oils cost a lot less in continental supermarkets - why I know not - so I load up there for a couple of seasons. That squares away any concerns about paying over the top!

Any oil to the basic spec will be good enough in the short term, extra money for additives and 'technological improvements' may have benefit in the longer term. I would suggest the more important question is how frequently do you change the oil and how do you treat the engine. I tend to use Castrol GTD, change half way throught the season and again at the end and also run the engine for a few minutes out of gear before and after a motoring session (that is even more important for a turbo).

Just changed the oil this weekend on my Yanmar 2GM20, using Tesco own brand oil for diesel engines, as recommended previously on this forum. One nice thing about the Tesco stuff is that it comes in 2 litre containers, which just happens to be the volume of oil to be added to the engine. Saves having to measure out into a jug beforehand.

Hmm

£3.75 per litre against £1.60 per litre.

This engine went out of production in about 1980 so is quite old now. I would be cosseting it and would be happy spending a few extra pounds on each oil change.

It will only take about 4 litres - a difference of £8.60 per oil change.

Hardly financial disaster to a person running two cars and a boat.

I actually run 3 cars (Volvo 940 runs on LPG done 217,000 miles) and have 2 boats, one for the sea and one for the rivers/canals but I did not get where I am today by spending £3.75 per litre on engine oil when £1.60 will suffice.

I was hoping that some of the clever bods who know about oils would tell me whether there was a reason why the branded oils are much more expensive. I am aware that Castrol spend money on Formula 1 sponsership etc and I would rather support a company that just sells an honest product.
