IS USING JUST ONE ENGINE FALSE ECONOMY

Hi Guys I’m the guy that asked the original question, wow!! didn’t mean to start world war 111, but thanks for all the comments, still not too clear on one or two engines, looks about 60% in favour, but worried enough by the comments about related problems to the gearbox running hot and unlubricated on the windmill blade. Thanks for educating me, for my first topic it has really been an eye opener. Do you think putting the unused engine in gear, with the leg up, would stop the windmill effect and lessen the drag factor, given that I am only doing 4 to 6 knots and at 4 knots it hardly effects the speed if I turn an engine off and psychologically, feeding 6 less cylinders, has a much better feel good factor.

Hi robyonfrome,

Make sure you have asked the gearbox manufacturer about windmilling the prop etc.

If you have a hydraulic gearbox like Twindisc, placing the stopped engine in gear doesn't stop the shaft turning.

I think you will find the OP is running a boat with sterndrives.

In this case, you will do no damage having one not running.
I wouldnt kick one leg up tbh - it means all the bits of previously hidden metal on the hydraulic shafts become exposed and if little barnacle critters get in there they can damage seals.

Re: Some sea spots, instead of engines talk...

Wow thanks for those pics MapisM. Only just seen them, I've been away on the boat. Those places looks fantastic. 1&7 look like the smoothified "Henry Moore" rocks that you find between Corsica and Sardinia, eg Lavezzi island, and around there. Is that where thay are taken?

And where are 2,3,6,8? Exactly please, becuase I'd like to go there!

Your boat looks great too. Thanks for posting

Re: Some sea spots, instead of engines talk...

Ok then, let's see...
...though I'm afraid that for 3 and 6 you should rather take a 747 than a boat!
Hey, I did tell that I was cheating a bit, didn't I?... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
