I normally enjoy Twister Ken's responses and find them to be pretty much on the mark every time, so imagine my horror when he dared to have a pop at our national treasure Sir RKJ. C'mon, this guy is a living legend. He's a sailing God. You know what, he's entitled to whinge - not at his age, but for what he's undertaking. Can you imagine doing such a long and arduous passage on your own with nobody else to share the trials and tribulations with? There are plenty of "hot shot" racers who routinely whinge, I for one take my hat off to him. For sure, he's about the only reason any of us have for still following the Velux race which has been very disappointing.

Was TK having a pop?.....I didn't take it like that /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I agree though, RKJ is probably a "National Treasure" for some, I think he is a gentleman and a scholar, and I think too, like Chichester and Alec Rose, shows that age is no barrier, to courage, fortitude, and tenacity, and if RKJ wants to have a bit of a whinge, that's ok by me! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Smiffy, how ya doin, y'old git!

I say let him whinge, if that's what he's doing. He has, after all, run out of whisky. That, for me, is enough.

Ha!

Pops

Ffank you, Smiffy.

I didn't say he was a whinger. I merely invited those more knowledgeable than I to discuss the proposition.

Personally, I think he's justified at having a pop at many things, not least a boat, which like many insurance policies, has proved somewhat disappointing when called upon to perform. But what made me wonder whether he is a whinger is his apparent feeling that the weather isn't playing quite fair.

If I'm lucky enough to be where he is now at his age I shall feel very very lucky; and entitled to a "whinge". Better a bad day sailing than . . .

You're welcome! I don't think it's the weather so much, as that bloody boat, Just my opinion of course, but I think too much emphasis is placed on hi-tech gizzmos, and the latest this and that, it's all proved to be a total bloody shambles. I think if he had a decent windvane self steering on board and one as a spare for parts, sails that were just good and strong without hi-tech battens that aint up to the job............well, I am sure you get my drift. Whatever, I am absolutely sure that RKJ will give it his best shot, and I have a feeling, that after Oz, things may take a different turn.

It's easy to pontificate, sat here in me nice comfy chair, but I can't help wonder whether or not he will just concentrate on keeping the boat in one piece, trying for a fairly decent average daily run, instead of pushing it for every last bit he can get out of her? I think somebody already said that it is becoming a race of attrition? That's the way it seems to me, as the oldsaying goes, "it aint over until the fat lady sings" (apologies to "Fat Lady" of these forums, but please don't sing!).................. It's still far from over /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

RKJ may or may not be a winger but I know for certain that he’s a bin raker! The lad, who works behind the counter, well runs it really, of our purveyor of boat parts caught this, what he described as a bearded scruff, rooting through the shop bin. Seeing he was not a regular and not recognising him he told him to “f@ck off” RKJ meekly did so. Later in the club house on being introduced RKJ said he found it amusing, well he had to really didn’t he.

So what is wrong with looking for re-cycling opportunties?.............Do it meself, at any and every opportunity! You would not believe what some snotty yotties chuck away!
