Re: \"Is this you?\" - Mostly east coast

Anyone know what the rig is on Mersea Memsahib? Someone told me - it's an interesting boat, much larger than it appears from a long way away. Apparently it sails very well, according to the chap who told me about it.

Re: \"Is this you?\" - Mostly east coast

Its a freedom rig... which is a unstayed mast, with a wishbone boom...

Rather unconventional, but as you say, supposed to work well.....

has the advantage of being able to rotate completely forward to spill wind when in a single mast version like this one....

Re: \"Is this you?\" - Mostly east coast

Correct, I was told it was a freedom rig.

I seem to be good at spotting oddly-rigged boats, having seen an aerorig catamaran at Brighton.

These rigs seem pretty good from the reports, I wonder why more people don't use 'em.

Re: \"Is this you?\" - Mostly east coast

I posted most of those pics and my memory of the location was decidedly hazy so some of 'em could be wrong - but always wise to be prepared with a shiny boat! I was having a lovely day as crew just looking after dog and camera and enjoying seeing so many boats out. In our former marina home, Sovereign Harbour, you rarely got close enough to another boat to take a decent piccie. There were loads of opportunities last weekend on the East Coast, however.

er more correctly "cat" rig.? As used by Freedom, and in Mersea Memsahibs case, Nonsuch

East Coast Boats - more

At the risk of getting a forum earful (screenful?) for not giving them away on yourboatpix, I have about 600 boat pics at: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjDHgxvN
They are mostly traditional boats on the east coast of England, but there are some historic oddities and some outliers.

As a photographer who sails, I keep my photos in one place, and although I claim no great skill, and they earn me very little, I'm not prepared to just give them away. Already on three occasions people have stolen my photos for commercial purposes, and two of them were fellow yachtsmen.

To counterbalance that, more often someone who has liked a picture of their boat has come alongside and given me a bottle of wine or the like.

So yes, I am a miserable git who won't share on boatpix, but if you see a picture of your boat and want it, I will give it to you freely for non-commercial use - you just need to ask.

Last time I posted such a link I got a thorough b0ll0cking on the forum... I await this one...

Very kind of you to take photos and offer them (however you choose to do it), but I don't really see how the owners would ever find the shots of their boats. I just googled Muntjak + Sadler and didn't get to Muntjak's photo.

Perhaps I'm missing something.

Yourboatpix was set up as a photo exchange site, i think its a brilliant concept.

You're quite right, I haven't had the energy to index them sensibly. If you read the text which accompanies the set:
If you look at my boats collection www.flickr.com/photos/grahamcameronhimse lf/collections/72...
you will find the better shots organised into more meaningful sets.
you'll find your way to a somewhat more helpful organisation.

If I take shots during an event I usually create a set and tell the organisers of the event to draw it to the attention of the participants. If I think I have a particularly good shot I try to contact the owner to give it to them freely. It's rather rewarding, because people love photos of their own boat (even not very good ones) and are often effusively grateful.

As for the shots of Muntjak entering Lossiemouth - I put them on a data stick and took them along the pontoon. The owner had them on his laptop before he got his oilies off!

One day I'll get round to indexing them.

Great, you're already on the case. Thought it was worth mentioning.

Can't do it better than that!
